Balthis and Bailar6 obtained tris (ethylenediamine) chromium-(III) complexes by the oxidation of chromium(II) solutions, using a procedure somewhat similar to that used for the synthesis of cobalt (III) com plexes. Mori7 described the preparation of hexaamminechromium(III) salts from the oxidation of chromium (II) salts in the presence of ammonia. The results obtained in both syntheses have been erratic.8,9 Berman noted that the foregoing syntheses are rendered dependable by the use of a catalyst of activated platinum on asbestos. Schaeffer,100 in a subsequent study, independently used colloidal platinum as a catalyst but reported some difficulty in separating it from the product.106 The procedures recommended and described here are based on the use of platinized asbestos as the catalyst. [Pg.41]

Studies in experimental animals suggest that biliary excretion of chemicals from the liver may be impaired by mirex or chlordecone (Berman et al. 1986 Curtis and Hoyt 1984 Curtis and Mehendale 1979 Curtis et al. 1979b, 1981 Davison et al. 1976 Mehendale 1976, 1977b, 1977c, 1981b Teo and Vore 1991). Measurement of serum bile acid levels may provide information regarding biliary excretory function. [Pg.144]

Acute-Duration Exposure. No information is available regarding the effects of acute-duration exposure to mirex in humans following inhalation, oral, or dermal exposure. A large number of studies have been published for acute-duration oral exposure of rats and mice to mirex (Baggett et al. 1980 Berman et al. 1986 Buelke-Sam et al. 1983 Chernoff et al. 1979a, 1979b Chu et al. [Pg.152]

Necrosis or atrophy of the spleen or thymus was observed in 4 of 6 rats given a single gavage dose of 224 mg/kg of phenol in water, and 1 of 7 given 120 mg/kg/day (Berman et al. 1995). Based on this effect, which was not further described, the study authors considered 224 mg/kg to be a LOAEL for immunological effects. One of 8 animals given 12 mg/kg/day, and 2 of 8 given 40 mg/kg/day for 14 days showed these same effects. [Pg.73]

Hepatotoxicity, characterized histologically by centrilobular necrosis, and elevated hepatic enzymes in serum were reported in separate studies in which laboratory animals were exposed to phenol in air at concentrations 26 ppm (Dalin and Kristoffersson 1974 Deichmann et al. 1944). Hepatic effects were not observed in monkeys, rats, or mice exposed to 5 ppm phenol in air continuously for 90 days (Sandage 1961). Hepatic effects have also not been observed in rodents following oral exposure to phenol (Berman et al. 1995 Hsieh et al. 1992 Jones-Price et al. 1983a, 1983b NCI 1980). [Pg.120]

Studies with rhesus monkeys have shown similar evidence of transmission of individual differences through parenting styles. Berman (1990) found that the rate of mothers rejecting their infants was correlated with the rejection rate of the mothers mothers. Individual differences in fearfulness or maternal behavior have been mapped onto those of the rearing mother, rather than the biological mother. [Pg.204]
