The faba bean, also known as field bean, horse bean and broad bean, is an annual legume that grows well in cool climates. It is well established as a feedstuff for horses and ruminants and is now receiving more attention as a feedstuff for poultry, particularly in Europe, because of the deficit in protein production. At the current time, the EU uses over 20 million t of protein feeds annually, but produces only 6 million t. The most suitable expansion in locally produced protein feedstuffs may be from crops of the legume family (beans, peas, lupins and soybeans). Field beans grow well in regions with mild winters and adequate summer rainfall and the beans store well for use on-farm. [Pg.123]

Dried lima beans store well without refrigeration, as long as they are kept under dry conditions and protected from pests. Therefore, they are usually stored after harvesting and either marketed or sent to processors at the most profitable time. Most of the dried beans which are processed are cooked and canned, but small amounts are also ground into flour. [Pg.628]

Decaffeination of green coffee beans is most usually carried out with a water/solvent partition system. The green coffee beans are first steamed until they are hot, wet, and swollen, to make the caffeine available. Solvent is then used to extract the caffeine out of the aqueous phase of the beans. Finally, the beans are steamed to drive off residual solvent. The coffee beans lose their wax surface covering in the process, as well as some flavor components. For this reason, the Robusta and Brazilian Arabica coffees that are dry-processed and have the most powerful flavors are usually the types that are decaffeinated. They become milder in the process. Mechanical polishing is used to improve the appearance of decaffeinated green coffee beans if they are not to be roasted immediately. Extra care is required, however, to store these decaffeinated beans since the loss of wax covering as well as caffeine renders them much more susceptible to fungal attack. [Pg.93]

The enzyme urease was discovered in soybeans by Takeuchi in 1909 it catalyzed the conversion of urea to ammonium carbonate. Jack beans were another excellent source of the enzyme. Jack bean powder could be stored for considerable periods and very active, soluble, urease extracted. After the action of urease, the ammonia could be estimated colorimetrically by Nesslerisation or titrimetrically. Tyramine acts as an indirect sympathomimetic to cause release of catecholamines from nerve terminals. It is present in a number of foods mature cheese, yeast extracts, some red wines, hung game, pickled herrings, broad bean pods. Normally, MAO-A in the intestinal mucosa will metabolise tyramine absorbed from the gut. In patients on the older MAOls, considerable amounts of tyramine will enter the circulation and this will lead to increased release of catecholamines stored in nerve terminals because the MAOI prevents their metabolism. For patients on RIMA drugs, high concentrations of tyramine can compete for MAO-A, thus mitigating some of the effects, and MAO-B is still available to metabolise noradrenaline (norepinephrine). One, physostigmine, is a natural compound used in ancient judgement rituals in West Africa. To judge the veracity of an accused person, he was made to drink a brew made from the Calabar bean. If he got sick and vomited, thus eliminating the poison, he was innocent. If the stuff stayed down and he died, he was, of course, guilty.
