Bl cetyl. Biacetyl [431-03-8] (2,3-butanedione) is a greenish yeUow liquid with a quinone odor. Biacetyl occurs naturally in bay oil and is readily soluble in organic solvents. It is a constituent of many food aromas, eg, butter, and is commonly used to flavor margarine. Flavor-grade biacetyl was available at 20.40/kg in July 1993, and is used as an odorant for coffee, vinegar, tobacco, and in perfumes. 

Bay Oil. Steam distillation of the leaves of the tree Pimenta racemosa (Mill) which is indigenous to certain islands of the West Indies, particularly Dominica and Puerto Rico, is called bay or bay leaf oil. The same source was used in the past to produce Bay Rum in which mm was distilled over the leaves. Bay oil [8006-78-8] is a yellowish to dark brown mobile Hquid with a fresh-spicy, sometimes medicinal odor with a lasting sweet-balsamic undertone. The oil finds extensive use in hair tonics, after-shave lotions as well as other men s-type fragrances. There is Htde or no use by the flavor industry. The methyl ether of eugenol, CjjHj 02, is found in calamus oil, cassie oU, betel oil, bay oil, and various other essential oils. It can be prepared artificially by the action of methyl iodide on eugenol sodium. Its constitution is identical with that of eugenol, except that the phenolic group, OH, has been replaced by the methoxy group, O. CHg.

Bay oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Pimenta racemosa (Miller) Moore (Myrtaceae). It is a dark brown liquid with a strong, spicy, clovelike odor. 

The Prudhoe Bay Oil Field is an onshore field situated on Alaska s northern coast. The field covers an area approximately 32 miles long (SI kn) by 12 miles wide (19 km] and is divided into two sections -the East Operating Area and West Operating Area (WOA). This paper deals with the control systems employed by Sohio Alaska Petroleum Company in operating the west half of the field. Although the location and climate of Prudhoe Bay present some unique construction and operating problems, the need for production control is similar to any oil field regardless of location.

Bay Oil occurs as a yellow or brown-yellow liquid with a pleasant, aromatic odor and a pungent, spicy taste. It is the volatile oil distilled from the leaves of Pimenta acris Kostel (Fam. Myrtaceae). It is soluble in alcohol and in glacial acetic acid. Its solutions in alcohol are acid to litmus.

Bay Oil As was described in the Chavicol Section, there are three main types of bay trees (1) CaliforniaBay (Umbelluria califomica), (2) West Indian Bay Pimenta racemosa) and (3) Sweet Bay or Bay Laurel Lauras nohilis). A lot of people refer to Bay Laurel simply as Laurel, and the oil from it as laurel leaf oil. Bay Laurel is chiefly grown in the countries of the Mediterranean. 

The mother lode of eugenol is going to be found in the West Indian bay oil of the Dominican Republic and surrounding nations. Eugenol content ranges from 38.6 - 75% [38].
