Inorganic Methods. Before the development of electrolytic processes, hydrogen peroxide was manufactured solely from metal peroxides. Eady methods based on barium peroxide, obtained by air-roasting barium oxide, used dilute sulfuric or phosphoric acid to form hydrogen peroxide in 3—8% concentration and the corresponding insoluble barium salt. Mote recent patents propose acidification with carbon dioxide and calcination of the by-product barium carbonate to the oxide for recycle. [Pg.478]

Banum oxide. [CAS 1304-28-5]. BaO. white solid, mp about 1900°C. reactive with H20 to forni barium hydroxide. Barium peroxide, Ba02-8H20, white precipitate, formed by reaction of barium salt solution and hydrogen or sodium peroxide, yields anhydrous banum peroxide upon heating at 100°C in a current of dry air. Anhydrous barium peroxide is also fonned by heating barium oxide in air or oxygen under pressure (at somewhat over one atmosphere pressure) and temperature of 400°C. [Pg.172]

This oxide, however, does not behave like an ordinary oxide for example, it does not react with water to give such a base as Ba(0H)4 nor with acids to yield such a salt as Ba(N03)4. Both oxygen atoms seem to be present as a single radical having the same valence, namely 2, as the simple oxygen radical in ordinary barium oxide, because, when barium peroxide is treated with acids, the ordinary barium salt and hydrogen peroxide are formed. [Pg.139]

Were the barium peroxide soluble this reaction would shortly come to equilibrium, but since the barium peroxide is very insoluble, the reaction is fairly complete. Sodium peroxide is soluble, and it hydrolyzes very extensively, as would be expected of the salt of so weak an acid this is equivalent to the statement that the neutralization of sodium hydroxide by hydrogen peroxide is very incomplete. [Pg.140]

The resulting solution will contain saline impurities such as salts of iron and manganese derived from the barium peroxide. These can be removed by the addition of a little phosphoric acid followed by neutralisation with barium hydroxide solution when the metals are precipitated as phosphates. If necessary, further addition of barium hydroxide may be made m order to precipitate the hydrogen peroxide as pure barium peroxide, which on treatment with the correct quantity of dilute sulphuric acid will give a pure solution of hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.328]

Barium Dioxid—Barium peroxid—BaOi—168.8—is prepared by heating the monoxid in O. It is a grayish-white, amorphous solid. Heated in air it is decomposed BaOi=BaO- -0. Aqueous acids-dissolve it wth formation of a barytic salt and HjOj. [Pg.203]
