Amyl mercaptan

A. M. Fakhriev, F. R. Ismagilov, and M. M. Latypova. Odorant for imparting smell to natural gas—contains a mixture of ethyl-, propyl-, butyl- and amyl-mercaptans, and additionally prescribed dialkyldisul-phides. Patent RU 2041243-C, 1995. [Pg.385]

Volatile methanethiol from biogenic sources is released to the atmosphere in coastal and ocean upwelling areas.1 Methanethiol and volatile liquid ethanethiol (bp, 35°C) are intermediates in pesticide synthesis and odorants placed in lines and tanks containing natural gas, propane, and butane to warn of leaks. Information about their toxicities to humans is lacking, although these compounds and 1-propanethiol should be considered dangerously toxic, especially by inhalation. Also known as amyl mercaptan, 1-pentanethiol (bp, 124°C) is an allergen and weak sensitizer that causes contact dermatitis. [Pg.365]

Sulfhydryl compounds are oxidized with ease to disulfides. It is necessary to employ mild oxidizing agents that do not attack the product. Oxidation of an alkaline solution of n-amyl mercaptan by iodine is described for -amyl disulfide (68%). A mixed disulfide, ethyl /-butyl disulfide, is obtained in 63% yield by treatment of an equimolecular mixture of ethyl and /-butyl mercaptans with iodine in ethanol. Hydrogen peroxide is probably the best reagent for the oxidation. " Halo and amino groups in the molecule are unaffected. Benzoyl disulfide, CtHsCOSSCOCjH, is conveniently prepared by the iodine oxidation of the potassium salt of thiobenzoic acid, C4H5COSK. ... [Pg.850]

Iodine (60.3 g., 0.48 gram atom) is added in small portions over a period of 20 minutes to a solution of 52 g. (0.50 mole) of n-amyl mercaptan and 22 g. (0.55 mole) of sodium hydroxide in 125 ml. of water. The mixture is stirred until all the iodine is dissolved and then is extracted with 200 ml. of benzene. The resulting benzene solution is washed three times with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and distilled to give 36 g. (70%) of di-n-amyl disulfide, b.p. 101-103°/2 mm., 1.4868. [Pg.107]

The compounds prepared from amyl alcohols are not the only commercially important compounds that contain a pentyl group. Amyl mercaptan has a thiol group (-SH) connected to a chain of five carbon atoms. Amyl mercaptan is also commonly referred to as Penta-larm which is added to natural gas to give it a skunklike smell. Natural gas has no odor and without the addition of amyl mercaptan, a gas leak would be undetectable. [Pg.790]
