Magnesium powder

Boron exists naturally as 19.78% lOB isotope and 80.22% IIB isotope. High-purity crystalline boron may be prepared by the vapor phase reduction of boron trichloride or tribromide with hydrogen on electrically heated filaments. The impure or amorphous, boron, a brownish-black powder, can be obtained by heating the trioxide with magnesium powder. [Pg.13]

Glyoxylic acid solution (protein detection) cover 10 g of magnesium powder with water and slowly add 250 mL of a saturated oxalic solution, keeping the mixture cool filter off the magnesium oxalate, acidify the filtrate with acetic acid and make up to a liter with water. [Pg.1191]

Manufacture of Aluminum and Magnesium Powder, 1987 ed., NFPA No. 651, National Fine Protection Association, Batterymarch Park, Quiacy, Mass., 1987. [Pg.336]

Chromium oxide is mixed with aluminum powder, placed in a refractory-lined vessel, and ignited with barium peroxide and magnesium powder. The reaction is exothermic and self-sustaining. Chromium metal of 97—99% purity is obtained, the chief impurities being aluminum, iron, and silicon (Table 4). Commercial chromium metal may also be produced from the oxide by reduction with silicon in an electric-arc furnace. [Pg.116]

An alternative synthetic route is described in U.S, Patent 2,900,398 as follows. A suspension of 30 g of 17a-methyI-testosterone and 10 g of selenium dioxide in 600 cc of tertiary amyl alcohol is treated with 60 g of magnesium powder and 6 cc of glacial acetic acid. [Pg.967]

The combined acid layers are distilled from a 250-cc. Claisen flask connected to an air condenser, which in turn is connected to a side-arm flask cooled by running water. The trimethylacetic acid is collected at i62-i6s°/a-tm. press., no-ii2/ i24mm. The yield, which depends somewhat on the form of magnesium, is 157-162 g. (61-63 Per cent of the theoretical amount based on tert-butyl chloride) when ordinary magnesium turnings are used and 177-178 g. (69-70 per cent) when 200-mesh magnesium powder is used. The acid melts at 34-350. [Pg.105]

The alkaline earth metals can be detected in burning compounds by the colors that they give to flames. Calcium burns orange-red, strontium crimson, and barium yellow-green. Fireworks are often made from their salts (typically nitrates and chlorates, because the anions then provide an additional supply of oxygen) together with magnesium powder. [Pg.714]

It ignites in contact with mercury vapour or magnesium powder. [Pg.75]

All aspects of prevention of magnesium (and aluminium) dust explosions in storage, handling or processing operations are covered in two recent US National Fire Codes [1]. Effects of various parameters on ignition of magnesium powders were studied [2], Maximum explosion pressures of 7.9 bar, with maximum rate of rise of 884 bar/s have been recorded [3],... [Pg.1758]

The mixture with magnesium powder has been described as a pyrotechnic explosive. [Pg.1765]

A mixture of magnesium powder and liquid nitrogen reacts very violently when lit with a fuse, forming magnesium nitride. [Pg.1787]

Bentzinger, von R. et al Praxis Naturwiss. Chem., 1987, 36, 38 A priming mixture of magnesium powder and barium peroxide to ignite thermite mixture was to be prepared, but as no barium peroxide was available, sodium peroxide was used instead. Some time after preparation, the mixture ignited spontaneously, because sodium peroxide, unlike barium peroxide, is very hygroscopic and forms hot cone, hydrogen peroxide from contact with atmospheric moisture. See Carbon dioxide, etc., above... [Pg.1826]

A dust or vapor explosion sometimes happens accidentally in industries, causing great damage. Several readily available materials are explosive when mixed with air in the form of a dust or vapor, so such explosions can be induced as a sabotage technique. Among suitable materials are flour, cornstarch, powdered milk, cocoa, very fine aluminum or magnesium powder, gasoline, and fuel oil. [Pg.62]

In the same year, Rausch and co-workers found that the reductive carbonylation of (Tj-QMes ZrC in THF using amalgamated magnesium powder gave high yields of (rj-C5Me5)2Zr(CO)2 (30) (80%) under mild reaction conditions (59,62). The low pressure employed, together with the... [Pg.340]
