Ammonium sulfate nitrate

This subsection discusses the production of ammonia, urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate (AN), calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), and ammonium sulfate nitrate (ASN). The manufacture of nitric acid used to produce nitrogenous fertilizers typically occurs on site and is therefore included here.

The cause of the accident was the blasting with dynamite of about 4,500t of a solidified mass of ammonium sulfate nitrate compound fertilizer (a double salt of ammonium sulfate and nitrate in a mole ratio of 1 2). This process had been practiced under supervision for many years, and about 30,000 blasting procedures had been experienced without accidents until the Oppau disaster. 

Ammonium halides have been used as versatile reagents in low-temperature solid-state redox and acid-base reactions. For example, direct reaction with the appropriate metal at 270-300° yields the ammonium salts of ZnClq , LaCls ", YCl6 , YBre, CuCb , etc., whereas Y2O3 yields either (NH4)3YBr6 or YOBr depending on the stoichiometric ratio of the reagents. Solid-state reactions of ammonium sulfate, nitrate, phosphates and carbonate have also been studied.

Frank and Hirano (1990) survey the potential for the production and consumption of alternative, usable, commercial byproducts in conjunction with a major reduction in national emissions of SO2 and NO,. Hiey conclude that the potential byproduct yields from the U.S. acid rain control program greatly exceed available markets for the chemical products. Byproducts evaluated in the study include gypsum, sulfuric acid, ammonium sulfate, ammonium sulfate/nitrate, and nitrogen/phosphorous fertilizer. Henzel and Ellison (1990) present a review of past, present, and potential future disposal practices and commercial FGD byproduct utilization. Hiey indicate that the only discemable trend is the production of usable gypsum by wet FGD systems. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments may create a need for disposal sites, which tend to be expensive and scarce and which could in themselves be environmental problems. Systems that produce usable byproducts are expected to become more important in the future as the disposal option becomes less viable.
