Barium chlorate

Barium chlorate, Ba(C103)2, is a colorless solid with a monocUnic crystal structure. It decomposes thermally above its melting-point temperature of 687 K according to  [Pg.291]

When barium chlorate burns with fuel components, the oxygen acts as an oxidizer, and the burning is accompanied by the light emission of a green-colored flame. [Pg.292]

Chlorine, bromine and iodine form halic(V) acids but only iodic(V) acid, HIO3, can be isolated. Solutions of the chloric) V) and bromic) V) acids can be prepared by the addition of dilute sulphuric acid to barium chlorate(V) and bromate(V) respectively, and then filtering (cf. the preparation of hydrogen peroxide). These two acids can also be prepared by decomposing the corresponding halic(I) acids, but in this case the halide ion is also present in the solution. [Pg.339]

Chemical Designations - Synonyms Barium Chlorate Monohydrate Chemical Formula Ba(C103)2 HjO. [Pg.34]

Barium chlorate creates mixtures which are strongly explosive with sulphur or phosphorus. It is incompatible with ammonium salts. Besides, in the presence of sulphuric acid, and like any other chlorate, it forms chlorine dioxide, which detonates at ambient temperature. [Pg.229]

Syn-Dihydroxylation. When the reaction was first discovered, the syn-dihydroxylation of alkenes was carried out by using a stoichiometric amount of osmium tetroxide in dry organic solvent.56 Hoffman made the observation that alkenes could react with chlorate salts as the primary oxidants together with a catalytic quantity of osmium tetroxide, yielding syn-vicinal diols (Eq. 3.11). This catalytic reaction is usually carried out in an aqueous and tetrahydrofuran solvent mixture, and silver or barium chlorate generally give better yields.57... [Pg.54]

MRH Barium chlorate 5.06/83, calcium chlorate 5.61/77, potassium chlorate 6.07/76, sodium bromate 4.98/80, sodium chlorate 7.32/75, zinc chlorate 6.11/76 Dry finely divided mixtures of red (or white) phosphorus with chlorates, bromates or iodates of barium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium or zinc will readily explode on initiation by friction, impact or heat. Fires have been caused by accidental contact in the pocket between the red phosphorus in the friction strip on safety-match boxes and potassium chlorate tablets. Addition of a little water to a mixture of white or red phosphorus and potassium iodate causes a violent or explosive reaction. Addition of a little of a solution of phosphorus in carbon disulfide to potassium chlorate causes an explosion when the solvent evaporates. The extreme danger of mixtures of red phosphorus (or sulfur) with chlorates was recognised in the UK some 50 years ago when unlicenced preparation of such mixtures was prohibited by Orders in Council. [Pg.1886]

The effect of humidity on combustibility of various mixtures of organic matter and sodium chlorate was studied. Addition of a proportion of hygroscopic material (calcium or magnesium chlorides) effectively reduces the hazard. Similar effects were found for sodium dichromate and barium chlorate. [Pg.310]
