To meet these demands, the powder can be deagglomerated or milled. A more or less loose deagglomeration can be performed by little jaw or impact crashers. Comparison of solvent-free mechanosynthesis with solution reactions indicate that milling is more effective than the oxidation performed in solution, and the reaction time is longer for solution reactions. Additional advantage of the ball-mill procedure is the easy workup (extraction of product from powdered reaction mixture with an organic solvent). Microwave-conducted oxidations afforded lower yields, which is ascribed to the less-effective mixing. Finally, energy consumption was measured, and molar energy conversion for vibrational mill was found to be superior to solvent-based methods. [Pg.299]

Mixing. The most widely used mixing method is wet ball milling, which is a slow process, but it can be left unattended for the whole procedure. A ball mill is a barrel that rotates on its axis and is partially filled with a grinding medium (usually of ceramic material) in the form of spheres, cylinders, or rods. The raw ROM (run of mine) ore is reduced in size from boulders of up to 100 cm in diameter to about 0.5 cm using jaw cmshers as weU as cone, gyratory, or roU-type equipment. In theory, increased quantities of the organic compound finely ground with constant quantities of potassium bromide should give infrared spectra of increasing intensity. However, good quantitative results by this direct procedure are difficult to obtain due to problems associated with the non-quantitative transfer of powder from the small ball-mill grinder (or pestle and mortar) into the compression die. Al203-montmorillonite complexes were prepared according to the procedure described by Sterte and Otterstedt (19).
