Clearly, the intended use of a collection item is extremely important to determining the acceptabiHty of a treatment. The degree to which a treatment affects appearance is obviously of the greatest importance for an art object. On the other hand, in natural history collections the collections serve as research resources above all. The effect a preservation or conservation treatment has on these research appHcations is the main consideration. Collections of art, archaeology, history, science, technology, books, archival materials, etc, all have their own values in terms of balance between preservation needs and collections use, and these values are, moreover, constantly subject to reevaluation and change. 

Has enough flexibiUty been built into the overall condensing turbine system (The balance changes over the history of a unit as a process evolves, generally in the direction of less condensing demand.)... 

A recent review of research on phosphorus input to surface waters from agriculture highlights the variability of particulate and dissolved phosphorus contributions to catchments. The input varies with rainfall, fertilizer application rates, the history of the application of the fertilizer, land use, soil type, and between surface and sub-surface water. The balance struck between export of nutrients from the catchment and recipient-water productivity is the primary factor which controls its quality. 

Atmospheric aerosols have a direct impact on earth s radiation balance, fog formation and cloud physics, and visibility degradation as well as human health effect[l]. Both natural and anthropogenic sources contribute to the formation of ambient aerosol, which are composed mostly of sulfates, nitrates and ammoniums in either pure or mixed forms[2]. These inorganic salt aerosols are hygroscopic by nature and exhibit the properties of deliquescence and efflorescence in humid air. That is, relative humidity(RH) history and chemical composition determine whether atmospheric aerosols are liquid or solid. Aerosol physical state affects climate and environmental phenomena such as radiative transfer, visibility, and heterogeneous chemistry. Here we present a mathematical model that considers the relative humidity history and chemical composition dependence of deliquescence and efflorescence for describing the dynamic and transport behavior of ambient aerosols[3]. 

Tropinone is another classic compound in the history of total synthesis. The celebrated plans of Willstatter and Robinson are shown in Schemes 4.20 and 4.21 and Figure 4.63 shows a synthesis map for different ways this compoimd has been made. The synthesis tree for the three-component Robinson plan is shown in Figure 4.64. Calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid are added as inputs to complete the balanced chemical equation since these are involved in a neutralization reaction. It is clear from the results summarized in Table 4.30 that the Robinson plan is the clear front-rimner because the synthesis is achieved in a single step even though the reaction yield is modest. Any further improvements to this method would be directed to improving this parameter. 

On a broader level, our everyday lives have been transformed by science. Yet many people remain deeply suspicious of science and, in particular, of chemistry. I hope that a balanced telling of the dramatic stories of some of the key people in the history of chemistry—people who permanently and irrevocably changed our lives—will help us understand the roots of our modern way of life. 

I suppose that some ingenious minds will be able to find a way of accommodating the chemical-balance hypothesis to these data, but I suspect that the accommodation will require convoluted circumventions, like those used by the Flat Earth Society in their efforts to maintain their defunct theory in the face of photographic evidence from space. If depression can be equally affected by drugs that increase serotonin, drugs that decrease it and drugs that do not affect it at all, then the benefits of these drugs cannot be due to their specific chemical activity. And if the therapeutic benefits of antidepressants are not due to their chemical composition, then the widely proffered chemical-imbalance theory of depression is without foundation. It is an accident of history produced serendipitously by the placebo effect.

The maximum pressure increase due to desired and undesired reactions is, in practice, often investigated in laboratory equipment such as the ARC, RSST, and VSP (see Chapter 2, and Section 3.3 below) to verify the results from the mass balance. These test show the pressure history for a set of extreme conditions and, therefore, provide an estimate for gas production which can be used in scale-up calculations. Limitations in the applications of such tests may occur because of the test size relative to the plant scale. These aspects are discussed in Section 3.3.4. Such tests must be carried out for the complete range of temperatures which may occur on the plant scale.
