Automotive refinishing

The two pack acrylic polyurethane was introduced to the automotive refinish markets in the 1970 s as an alternative to the existing synthetic cellulose and thermoplastic acrylic systems. Although their development in this market was rather slow, by the late 1980 s the polyurethane coating dominated the refinish market of Western Europe. 

The acrylic two pack coating produces coatings with similar aesthetics and performance characteristics to the original OEM coating, albeit cured at room temperature or undo low bake conditions. This has become increasingly important in the automotive refinish market with the extensive use of plastic components. A typical air drying refinish clearcoat formulation is as follows

Mix Parts I II and thin to spray viscosity in a 60 25 15 blend of butyl acetate/xylene/Solvesso 100. Solvesso 100 and methoxy propyl acetate help to adjust levelling. Again, the use of UV absorbers is essential. The silicone oil improves wetting over the waxy base basecoat. Use of catalyst is optional, but its presence can reduce pot life.

Nitrocellulose based lacquers often contain short or medium oil alkyds to improve flexibiUty and adhesion. The most commonly used are short oil non drying alkyds. Amino resins or urethane resins with residual isocyanate functional groups may be added to cross-link the coating film for improved solvent and chemical resistance. The principal appHcations are furniture coatings, top lacquer for printed paper, and automotive refinishing primers. 

Reaction of 1-pentanol with propionic acid provides 1-pentyl propionate [624-54-4] a new coatings solvent for automotive refinish and OEM paints, apphances, and for higher-solids systems (37). The esterification of 1-pentanol with formic acid to 1-pentyl formate [638-49-3] is conducted by concomitant removal of by-product water by a2eotropic distillation with diethyl ether (38). 

Higher butyryl esters, formulated with acryUc polymers, provide coatings with excellent weather resistance, good colorfastness and dispersibiUty, and good flow properties (154). Formulations for a typical automotive refinishing lacquer and a wood furniture lacquer are given in Tables 12 and 13, respectively. Low viscosity, high butyryl cellulose esters tolerate substantial amounts of alcohol solvent without appreciable increase in solution viscosity. 

Automotive Refinish Paints. Paint for appHcation to automobiles after they have left the assembly plant is a significant market. Although some of this paint is used for fuU repainting, especiaHy of commercial tmcks, most is used for repairs after accidents, commonly just one door or part of a fender, and so forth. In order to be able to serve this market, it is necessary to supply paints that match the colors of aH cars and tmcks, both domestic and imported, that have been manufactured over the previous ten years or so. Repair paints for the larger volume car colors are manufactured and stocked, but for the smaller volume colors formulas are suppHed by the coatings manufacturer to the paint distributor that permit a reasonable color match for any car by mixing standard bases.

As a result of its excellent fastness properties, P.R.170 is used in high grade industrial paints. The pigment lends color to finishes for tools, to implements, agricultural machinery, and commercial vehicles the opaque varieties are also used for automotive finishes, such as automotive refinishes. Thorough testing is necessary before a product can be used in original automotive finishes, for which full shades of P.R.170 are sometimes employed. 

P.Y.120 has less of an impact on the paint industry. In contrast to the similarly colored P.Y.97, P.Y.120 is fast to overcoating. Moreover, it exhibits noticeably higher durability. White reductions, reduced 1 1 to about 1 5, are approximately as durable as P.Y.151 systems. P.Y.120 is recommended for general industrial finishes, including automotive refinishes, and it is also suitable for use in architectural paints. P.Y.120 is completely fast to alkali. 

The paint industry is interested in individual representatives of this class, such as P.Y.128. These are used to color high grade paints, such as automobile (O.E.M) finishes and automotive refinishes. Other types are used in general industrial paints. As a rule, the fastness of disazo condensation pigments to overcoating is good to excellent in some media. The pigments are also used in architectural paints, sometimes also in emulsion paints. 

The paint industry employs P.B.15 1 for its excellent fastness properties to color all types of paints, including automotive refinishes and original automotive finishes, in both solid and metallic shades. 

P.R.88 has stimulated considerable interest throughout the paint industry. It is a suitable colorant especially for industrial coatings, including automotive (O.E.M.) finishes and automotive refinishes. Its red-violet shade is used frequently to produce opaque dark shades of red, bordeaux, and maroon, for which purpose the pig-... 

P.Y.108 is applied in various types of industrial finishes, especially in original automotive (O.E.M) and in automotive refinishes. It is also recommended for metallic finishes, although it is much less weatherfast in such systems. The pigment tends to seed, i.e., it forms specks upon storage. The mechanism behind this phenomenon remains to be elucidated. Besides, P.Y.108 also lends color to emulsion paints, in which it is durable enough to satisfy the requirements for exterior paints based on synthetic resin dispersions. It is also fast to acids, alkali, and plaster. 

High transparency makes P.Y.24 a valuable pigment for metallic finishes. It is used in relatively light shades, typically at a ratio of one part of color pigment to three parts of aluminum pigment. Thus prepared systems demonstrate excellent weatherfastness. Flavanthrone Yellow, like P.Y.108, tends to seed (Sec. 3.7.3.1). The pigment is heat stable up to 200°C and thus satisfies all possible heat stability requirements in this area. Flavanthrone Yellow is used in various industrial paints, especially in automobile O.E.M. finishes and in automotive refinishes. 

P.Y.138 is primarily applied in industrial finishes for commercial vehicles, automotive refinishes, and original automotive finishes. Incorporated in these systems, P.Y.138 is acid and alkali fast. However, exterior house paints which are applied onto a basic substrate show some sensitivity to alkali.
