Atopic dermatitis has increased in prevalence in recent years by two- to threefold, particularly in industrialized countries, along with an associated increase in prevalence of other IgE-mediated diseases such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. [Pg.1785]

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic or chronically relapsing inflammatory skin disease with eczematous lesions demonstrating typical morphology and distribution, increased susceptibility to cutaneous infections, severe pruritus, elevated serum IgE, the presence of allergen-specific IgE, and peripheral blood eosinophilia [1], The prevalence of AD rapidly increased during the past decades and is currently ranging between 10-20% in children and 1-3% in adults [1],... [Pg.181]

It is well documented that certain viral infections are associated with the induction and/or exacerbation of allergic reactions [84-86]. Moreover, infection with HCV, HAV and HBV can be associated with increased IgE levels [30, 31] and certain allergic manifestations [28]. In addition, HIV-1 infection can be associated with increased IgE levels [33-42] and augmented prevalence of adverse reactions to drugs and urticarial rash [47-48], Similarly, certain bacterial infections (e.g. S. aureus) can exacerbate atopic dermatitis [62-64], certain forms of allergic rhinitis [65, 66], and asthma [87], Therefore, it appears that viral and bacterial infections can be involved in the induction and/or exacerbation of respiratory and skin allergies. [Pg.207]

As shown in Fig. 5, the prevalence of skin burning decreased after the first few days of treatment, ostensibly as the skin healed and the therapeutic barrier function was restored. Of particular note, no increase was observed in the rate of infections during the 1 -year study. Improvement in the patient s atopic dermatitis was seen early in the study and was sustained throughout the remainder of the study [124]. [Pg.440]

Combined influences of endogenous and exogenous factors may lead to the development or to aggravation of hand eczema (Nilsson 1985). Atopic eczema in childhood has been found to be a more important predictive factor for hand eczema than occupational exposure (Meding and Swanbeck 1990). In a population of individuals with atopic dermatitis in childhood, 57% developed sporadic or continuous hand eczema during concrete work (Rystedt 1985). When compared with other occupations, such as the metal industry, cleaning, and even office work, equal prevalences were found. [Pg.559]

Some persons with ragweed dermatitis present with an eruption that closely mimics atopic eczema [71]. SQTL (weed) dermatitis, however, unlike most cases of atopic eczema, begins in adult life, tends to spare the feet and is worse during the summer. This form has even been reported in prepubertals [71, 82]. However, SQTL dermatitis is reported less commonly in women and is rarely reported in children. In adults, the prevalence is said to be 20 times greater in males [83], although the ratio in my practice is much lower than that. [Pg.738]
