In many countries, nickel is the commonest sensitizer in women, causing nickel allergy incidence to be high in a series of reported patch tests [399,400]. Since 1930, the emphasis has shifted from sensitization at work to sensitization in the home by nickel-plated metal and objects made of nickel alloy. The age of onset has altered to teenagers and young women and the source is now cheap metal jewellery and fasteners on clothing such as jeans studs. Also sensitization in infancy has been reported. Nickel-sensitive patients do not... [Pg.216]

Nickel allergy is an adverse effect of the use of nickel-containing medical apphances, such as orthopedic metal alloys, dental materials, and implants (9), and allergic reactions are common. Nickel allergy and contact dermatitis with nickel-based apphances have been reviewed (10). [Pg.2503]

Nickel allergy A health condition caused by exposure to nickel metal. [Pg.376]

Nickel can pose a health hazard to certain individuals. The most common health problem is called nickel allergy. Some people are more likely to develop nickel allergy than are others. People who are sensitive to nickel may develop a skin rash somewhat like poison ivy. The rash becomes... [Pg.381]

Nickel is present in dozens of products. So it is easy for sensitive people to develop nickel allergy. Perhaps the most common cause of nickel allergy is body piercing. Some people have their ears pierced for earrings, while others have their lips, nose, or other body parts pierced. Inexpensive jewelry placed into these piercings is frequently made of stainless steel. Stainless steel contains nickel. The presence of nickel in a piercing can cause nickel allergy to develop. [Pg.382]

During the past few decades there has been a rapid growth in the industrial demand for nickel. Nickel (Ni) is used in steel production, in alloys (e.g., for coins and domestic utensils), in electroplating, and in nickel-cadmium batteries. After a prolonged period of relatively level production, nickel output over the past two years has begun to rise as existing producers have expanded their output. Annual nickel production in the western world has risen by almost 4% to 678 000 tons, and a further increase of several percent is expected in the years to come (Seifert and Anke 1999). The prevalence of nickel allergy is about 10% for women, and about 2% for men (Lieden 1994). [Pg.118]

For example, many women consume inadequate iron. Nickel allergy is a common disorder. About 10% of tested individuals reacted positively to the nickel-patch test and incidence was highest among women (34). Because recent reports indicate that dietary nickel may be Important in h2ind-eczema caused by nickel (35,36), one treatment for nickel allergy is reduction of dietary nickel. Extrapolation from animal findings suggests that care should be exercised with such treatment to assure that proper nickel and iron nutriture is maintained to avoid adverse consequences. [Pg.32]

Manufacturers of nitinol products are known to electropolish the surface of the nitinol wire to produce an oxidized surface layer that contains only titanium and oxygen. This reduces the potential for nickel allergy and toxicity problems. The alloy MP35N used in the CS/SF device is a quaternary of cobalt, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, and is known to have high strength and corrosion resistance. Additionally, this metal has been found to be biocompatible and MR compatible. These are all desirable properties for an implantable device, but its nickel content should be noted and considered when dealing with patients who are allergic to nickel. [Pg.477]
