Cloud Water and Precipitation Collectors. Several methods have been developed for collecting cloud water samples (24-26). Probably the device most commonly used in warm clouds is the slotted rod collector developed by the Atmospheric Science Research Center at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. Commonly known as the ASRC collector (25), this collector consists of an array of rods constructed from Delrin (a form of nylon). Each rod is hollow and has a slot located at its forward stagnation line. The rod radius determines the collection efficiency as a function of particle size, the rods are sized to collect cloud droplets but not submicrometer aerosol particles, and the 50% cutoff is calculated to be at about 3 xm. [Pg.127]

James N. Pitts, Jr., is a Research Chemist at the University of California, Irvine, and Professor Emeritus from the University of California, Riverside. He was Professor of Chemistry (1954-1988) and cofounder (1961) and Director of the Statewide Air Pollution Research Center (1970-1988) at the University of California, Riverside. His research has focused on the spectroscopy, kinetics, mechanisms, and photochemistry of species involved in a variety of homogeneous and heterogeneous atmospheric reactions, including those associated with the formation and fate of mutagenic and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic compounds. He is the author or coauthor of more than 300 research publications and three books Atmospheric Chemistry Fundamentals and Experimental Techniques, Graduate School in the Sciences—Entrance, Survival and Careers, and Photochemistry. He has been coeditor of two series, Advances in Environmental Science and Technology and Advances in Photochemistry. He served on a number of panels in California, the United States, and internationally. These included several National Academy of Science panels and service as Chair of the State of California s Scientific Review Panel for Toxic Air Contaminants and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Acid Deposition. [Pg.991]

Over the past 15 years, the atmospheric science community has developed a series of mobile platforms with highly accurate and specific fast response instrumentation that have revolutionized atmospheric chemistry field measurements. These include high-altitude aircraft, such as NASA s ER-2 and WB-57, and lower-altitude aircraft like the NASA DC-8, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) (Naval Postgraduate School) Twin Otters, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) C-130, and the DOE Gl.
