The photodissociation rate coefficients are included as source and sink terms in a system of time-dependent continuity equations for the atmosphere. Some solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran and diethyl ether (there may be others you require also) are frequently required in very dry form, and it is inconvenient to set up a still each time a small quantity is required for a trial reaction. The efficiency of an organic lab is therefore enhanced by having these dry solvents available on-tap from permanent stills, which provide very effective drying, and are kept under an inert atmosphere. Modem designs for permanent stills used for such distillations are very compact, and do not cause inconvenience (see Chapter 5). For every solvent which is required in dry form regularly a permanent still should be installed in the lab. Earth to space (sateUite) to earth communication links are relatively insensitive to ionospheric disturbances. Communications between earth and manned space vehicles are barely affected by plasmas when the spaceships are well away from the atmosphere, eg, in orbit or in a translunar trajectory. However, during reentry of a spaceship, a low temperature plasma forms around the vehicle and intermpts the communication links to it (183). Aerosol spray cans were invented in 1929, and perfection of a reliable valve and development of disposable cans took place in the 1940s. Shortly thereafter, aerosol became a household word. Like many other modem conveniences, however, the aerosol spray can has drawbacks as well as advantages. Because the particles in an aerosol are extremely tiny, they are quite mobile. They last for a long time in the atmosphere and can affect the climate, as already described. They can penetrate deep into our lungs and cause adverse health effects.
