Sail-related (raps—formed when the plastic salt formations deform into domelike structures under the overburden forces of the beds above the salt beds. Such plastic flowing (and bulging) of the salt beds deforms the rock formations above producing anticline structures and faults in the rock formation astride the domelike structures (see Figures 2-49 and 2-50). 

Returning to the observed values for these cesium salts, plotted as dark circles in Fig. 57, we must conclude that the position of the experimental points—nearer the diagonal than any salt of Rb, K, or Na—does not indicate anything unusual about the aqueous solution of the cesium salts, but merely arises from the fact that these cesium salts happen to crystallize in a more compact lattice structure, with less void space between the ions. We cannot make a similar remark about the points for the lithium salts, which lie astride the diagonal the interpretation of these values will be discussed later.

Astrid M.W. Bulte is a researcher in science edncation, being since 1999 connected to the Freudenthal Institnte for Science and Mathematics Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. In her current position she focuses her research on the development and evaluation of authentic practice-based science units for secondary education. She contributes to the education of student - science teachers, teaching students how to communicate science issues. She takes a leading position in national curriculum developments. After she obtained her Master degree in Chemical Engineering Science in 1989, she completed her doctoral thesis in 1994 in the same subject at the same university. From 1994 till 1999, she was a teacher of physics and chemistry in secondary education.

Lavoisier s dictum that physics should precede chemistry became a logicohistorical interpretation, as he meant it to be, instead of a statement of pedagogical or disciplinary strategy. Paradoxically, the contemporary prestige of physics is associated with this logicohistorical tradition and with the classical and aesthetic appeal of abstract mathematics, rather than with the precision laboratory tradition on which much of modern physics, like chemistry, is based. The founder myth of Lavoisier has been perpetuated in the hagiography of the disciplinary clan of chemistry because of his role not only in the conceptual and linguistic foundations of nineteenth-century chemistry but also in a community of practitioners who refined the social definition of the chemical discipline its formal distinction from "physique" in the Paris Academy, its autonomous status as the subject of the Annales de Chimie, its Janus-faced position astride the abyss that previously divided the philosophical science of the university from the technical practice of the laboratory. 

It was a hue shock to Astrid and myself when we learned last Sunday night that Hitoshi has passed away. This is a tremendous loss for our whole community. As yon correctly state, we had seen him in Tokyo twice, namely at October 12 and 13, when he attended both of my lectures. He was in good mood and spirit and we had in fact intense scientific discnssions about the chelate effect and this continued until November 3, when he sent me his last mail. We all definitely lost a veiy dear friend. Of conrse, Astrid and I have immediately written to his wife Ei... and as you say, at this time we can only pray for his sonl.
