Always the optimist, I did not allow myself to dwell on shortfalls. In 1990, I received another phone call, this time from Washington, DC. The caller asked whether I would take part in a TV interview. As usual, I was ready to cooperate. He told me that Michael Bilton, producer of a British monthly documentary program called First Thursday, was planning to make an hour-long special about the Edgewood Arsenal research and he wanted my views represented. He might come to Woodland Hills from England to discuss it with me. [Pg.239]

In chemical combination, arsenic can exist in oxidation state III or V and can have a coordination number of 3, 4, 5, or 6. In marine samples, arsenic is mainly found in the V oxidation state, although, usually as a consequence of biological factors, arsenic (III) compounds can also occur and may at times be predominant. The properties and analysis of the various arsenic-containing compounds of significance in marine arsenic research are briefly discussed, and information is provided on their synthesis. For ease of reference, the arsenic compounds frequently mentioned by name (or abbreviation/acronym) are listed in Table IV together with their structure numbers. [Pg.151]

Consequently, there was renewed interest in marine arsenic research, and several groups worked in this area during the 1970s. Not surprisingly, they were from countries such as Japan and Australia and those in Scandinavia, where seafood is either widely consumed or is an important export commodity. The research activity resulted in the identification of arsenobetaine and the range of other arsenic compounds reported in Section IV. [Pg.170]

Picric acid and TNT both require using boosters for conveying detonation to the main charge from the detonator and tetryl (2, 4, 6-trinotrophenylmethylnitramine) came into use for this purpose mainly because of the availability of diphenylamine in the dyestuffi industry. The Woolwich Arsenal Research Department had developed a batch process for its preparation by 1910 and it continued to be made by a similar method until World War II. [Pg.373]

Even in the early arsenic research, it was recognized that the different arsenic compounds, although not known, have different toxic properties (42,43). [Pg.34]

Blood arsenic, whether given as As+ or As" ", rapidly clears from humans, mice, rabbits, dogs, and primates half-life is 6 h for the fast phase and about 60 h for the slow phase. In rat, however, blood arsenic is mostly retained in erythrocytes, and clears slowly half-life is 60-90 days. In rats, the excretion of arsenic into bile is 40 times slower than in rabbits and up to 800 times slower than in dogs. Most researchers now agree that the rat is unsatisfactory for use in arsenic research. [Pg.36]

The most popular friction devices according to the TYROSAFE report are the SCRIM (used by nine EU countries) and the GripTester, towed device (used by eight EU countries). Two EU countries use the Skiddometer BVll and two EU countries use the SRM (Stuttgarter Reibungsmesser) or RoadSTAR (Road Surface Tester of Arsenal Research). All other devices are used by only one EU country (TYROSAFE 2008). An overview of highway and runway friction devices is also provided by NCFIRP web-only document 108 (Hall et al. 2009). [Pg.719]

The RoadSTAR device was developed in Austria device was developed in Austria (AIT, formerly known as Arsenal Research) and consists of a modified truck that carries a measuring ribbed wheel mounted at the rear of the chassis, a water tank, a storage cabinet and control equipment for data recording/processing (Figure 16.12). The wheel moves parallel to the direction of travel and is loaded with 3500 N load, and measurements are taken, usually, at a slip ratio of 18% (slip ratio may vary, if desired). [Pg.724]

Cleaning up arsenic-contaminated soil and water poses a significant problem. One approach is to find plants that will leach arsenic from the soil. Such a plant, the brake fern, recently has been shown to have a voracious appetite for arsenic. Research led by Lenna Ma, a chemist at the University of Florida in Gainesville, has shown that the brake fern accumulates arsenic at a rate 200... [Pg.102]
