Arena

Forensic science is an applied science having a focus on practical scientific issues that come up during criminal investigations or at trial. Some components ate unique to the field because it is conducted within the legal arena. Forensic science issues in chemistry and biochemistry in criminal investigations are discussed herein. There are a host of other forensic science areas, eg, forensic medicine, forensic dentistry, forensic anthropology, forensic psychiatry, and forensic engineering, any of which may overlap with forensic chemistry. 

In the industrial arena, the term power generation most typically refers to the production of electrical or mechanical power via any of several energy conversion processes. Early examples of practical power generation devices include water-wheel-powered mills for grinding grain, which were reportedly used as early as 100 BC in the Balkans and areas of the Middle East, and wind-powered mills, which were widely used as early as the tenth century in the Middle East. 

In the cardiovascular arena, hundreds of thousands of patients are treated by interventional cardiologists, whereas in the past these people would have been treated by surgeons. The surgeons, to offset the loss of some patients, take on more difficult procedures which over time become routine in nature. Thus, more patients can be successfully treated and the marketplace expands. 

Although more often associated with household and commercial waste, recycling has proven to be very successhil in the industrial arena. Industrial recycling is the recovery for reuse or sale of materials from what otherwise would be wastes destined for disposal (5). Typically, the reclaimable materials employed in industrial recycling may consist of obsolete products, spent materials, industrial by-products or residues, or pollution control products. The recycling of many of these products is so well estabHshed that under standard commercial practices such materials are destined only for recovery, not for disposal.

The abihty to tap an array of iron units to provide flexibiUty in all parts of the business cycle is a topic of great interest in keeping costs of raw steel down in the international arena. This is being combined with efforts to reduce the time for a given process by even a few seconds. 

Many firms tend to staff their technical service efforts with personnel that have experience solely in the particular business involved. It is often of value to consider individuals having experience in related industries, both to provide a different set of skills and to provide a different perspective than that of in-house experts. This is particularly important in the specialty chemicals arena, where formulations experience is generally of paramount importance. This variety of knowledge is often largely experiential, as much of the treatment and behaviors of formulations in the chemical industry are empirical or experience-based rather than quantitatively understood. It is therefore extremely difficult to train personnel ia dealing with the often nebulous aspects of formulations technology. 

California contains the largest formation of diatomite in the United States the Monterey Formation extends from Point Arena in Mendocino County in the north to San Onofre in the south (7). The most extensive deposit is near Lompoc, Santa Barbara County, and is of marine origin. A freshwater deposit is being mined near Burney, Shasta County. Other important deposits (not mined as of this writing) are located in Monterey, Fresno, Inyo, Kem, Orange, San Bemadino, San Joaquin, Sonoma, and San Luis Obispo counties. 

Credibly communicating risk information in the public arena... 

Judging from our present knowledge, such a description is far from the whole story. The article of Benderskii and Goldanskii [1992] addressed mostly the vast amount of experimental data accumulated thus far. On the other hand, the major applications of QTST involved gas-phase chemical reactions, where quantum effects were not dominant. All this implies that there is a gap between the possibilities offered by modern quantum theory and the problems of low-temperature chemistry, which apparently are the natural arena for testing this theory. This prompted us to propose a new look at this field, and to consistently describe the theoretical approaches which are adequate even at T = 0. 

Another measure of the importance of a scientific discipline is its contributions to technology. In this arena, the study of particle adhesion has a long list of accomplishments and is expected to continue to add value in a variety of industries. 

We have attempted to relate the basics of silicone chemistry to applications where adhesion is an important property. These applications cover a vast industrial arena that does not make a review of this sort easy. Instead, we focused on the fundamental aspects of silicone physics and chemistry and related them to adhesion and adherence properties. We have attempted to use a logical structure to help the reader understand silicone adhesion. Adhesion and cohesion have been considered as they both determine the ultimate performance of an adhesive joint. 

Despite the progress outlined in this chapter, much work remains to be done in the metal surface preparation arena. For example, there is still no ideal surface preparation method that does for steel what anodization processes do for aluminum and titanium. The plasma spray process looks encouraging but because it is slow for large areas and requires rather expensive robot controlled plasma spray equipment, its use will probably be limited to some rather special applications. For more general use, the sol-gel process has potential if future studies confirm recently reported results.
