Soiled arena

Response of male or female to soiled arena that has inserted one clean tile. We will use the arena as the previous animals have left it, but now replace one of the soiled tiles with a clean one. [Pg.118]

Is there a signihcant difference between behavior toward the clean tile in a soiled arena and the soiled tile in a clean arena ... [Pg.120]

Another important technology in the national security and homeland defense arena is ion trap secondary ion mass spectrometry. Many chemical warfare agents are not volatile and tend to condense on particle surfaces. Research at Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratories has used this technology to analyze mustard agent on the surface of soil particles down to a surface coverage of 0.07 monolayers. [Pg.85]

Naphtocyclinone (45) was isolated from the mycelium of S. arenae [32]. Another similar metabolite (naphtomevalin, i.e. 46) was isolated from an Australian soil sample at 2.5 pg/ml. [Pg.319]

In the Times Beach incident, a waste oil dealer removed about 20,000 gal of oil contaminated by 30 ppm of 2,3,7,8-tctrachlorodibcnzo-p-dioxin from a hexachlorophene manufacturing plant, (a) What mass of dioxin was involved (b) Some of this oil was sprayed in horse arenas, and in some spots in these arenas, the soil dioxin concentration was about 2000 ppb. What mass of this soil needed to be ingested by a 100 g guinea pig to reach the LD50 of 0.6 pg/kg ... [Pg.181]

Of 12 tiles, one was the odd one (a tile soiled by a female or a male in a clean arena or a clean tile in an arena soiled by a female or a male). A mouse was observed to stop and sniff at the following frequencies ... [Pg.120]

The effect of anthropogenic activity relating to industrial and economic development has had a significant impact on the environment. In recent decades, public awareness of environmental pollution has increased markedly, and the introduction of guidelines and legislation for the protection of water, air and soil quality -of major importance in the political arena - is imminent. As an integral component of environmental policy, it has become essential to regulate and monitor toxic substances. [Pg.403]

Missouri. In 1971, a used oil transporter sprayed oil contaminated with TCDD on riding arenas and roads In Missouri for dust control. The death of about 60 horses and Illnesses In children led to an Investigation by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Health effects were attributed to TCDD In the oil In 1974 (4). However, governmental agencies responsible for action were under the mistaken Impression that TCDD had a half-life In the environment of one year and, therefore, carried out only minimal cleanup. In 1982, this problem resurfaced when Times Beach, a community near St. Louis, was evacuated after TCDD concentrations above 1,000 ppb were detected In soil samples. Decisions on this evacuation were carried out under an atmosphere of scientific uncertainty, public emotion, and political pressures within U.S. EPA. At present, there are 43 contaminated sites In Missouri, some of which are being excavated and restored. [Pg.5]

More than 40 sites have been identified in the state of Missouri where soil is contaminated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodlbenzo-p-dioxln (2,3,7,8-TCDD) at levels above 1.0 parts per billion. Many of the sites resulted from dioxin-containing wastes being mixed with waste oil and sprayed as a dust suppressant. Other sites such as the Mlnker residential area were contaminated by using soil as fill dirt which had been sprayed for dust control and excavated and moved from a horse arena. [Pg.216]

As hard floors are different, different flooring materials are used for different I I settings. The type of soils and soil loads are also quite different therefore, the cleaning compounds and methods used are also different. The floor cleaners can be formulated alkaline, acidic, or neutral pH. However, floor cleaners widely used in the I I arena are either alkaline or acidic, and could be both, switching alternately. [Pg.245]

TCDD contamination has resulted from improper waste disposal, the most notable case of which resulted from the spraying of waste oil mixed with TCDD on roads and horse arenas in Missouri in the early 1970s. Contamination of the soil in Times Beach, Missouri, resulted in the whole town being bought out and its topsoil dug up and incinerated at a cost exceeding 100 million. [Pg.100]
