Sheet can be produced by melt extmsion, but in this case a three-roll stack of quenching roUs is generally used (Fig. 2). More than three roUs may be used where necessary. The roUs may be mounted vertically or horizontally. The web is extmded through a slot die in a thickness close to the desired final thickness. The die is in very close proximity to the first chill roU or chill-roll nip. The web may be cast horizontally directly onto the upper chill roU of the stack as shown (Fig. 2), or it may be extmded into the first nip directly. The roUs quench the sheet and provide the surface polish desired. In some applications, matte or embossed roUs maybe used to impart special surface characteristics for certain functions. Where the utmost in optical (glazing) quality is desired the trend has been to mount the roU stack horizontally. The hot melt is then extmded vertically down into the first nip. This avoids problems associated with sag of a horizontal hot melt no matter how short the distance between die and quench. [Pg.379]

Optical Applications. Vitreous siUca is ideal for many optical appHcations because of its excellent ultraviolet transmission, resistance to radiation darkening, optical polishing properties, and physical and chemical stabiUty. It is used for prisms, lenses, cells, wiadows, and other optical components where ultraviolet transmission is critical. Cuvettes used ia scatter and spectrophotometer cells are manufactured from fused siUca and fused quart2 because of the transmissive properties and high purity (222). [Pg.512]

Dehydration The growing use of isopropanol as a clean-rinse fluid in microelectronics produces significant quantities of an 8.5-90 percent isopropanol waste. Removing the water and trace contan ii-nants is required before the alcohol can be reused. Pervaporation produces a 99.99 percent alcohol product in one step. It is subsequently polished to remove metals and organics. In Europe, dehydration or ethanol is the largest pei vaporation application. For the very large ethanol plants typical of the United States, pei vaporation is not competitive with thermally integrated distillation. [Pg.2055]

These are series motors and are relatively compact and lightweight compared to an a.c. motor. The use of such motors is therefore common for hand tools and home appliances and also for such applications that require a high speed (above 3200 r.p.m.) which is not possible in an a.c. machine. Vertical Pressure Leaf Filters are essentially the same as Horizontal Plate Filters except for the orientation of the filter elements which are vertical rather than horizontal. They are applied for the polishing slurries with very lov solids content of 1-5% or for cake filtration with a solids concentration of 20-25%. As with the horizontal plate filter the vertical leaf filters are also well suited for handling flammable, toxic and corrosive materials since they are autoclaved and designed for hazardous environments when high pressure and safe operation are required. Likewise, they may be readily jacketed for applications whenever hot or cold temperatures are to be preserved.The largest leaf filters in horizontal vessels have a filtration area of 300 m and vertical vessels 100 m both designed for an operating pressure of 6 bar. [Pg.196]

One of the differences between polishing and cake filtration is the space between the plates. For polishing applications the clearances are about 20 mm as opposed to cake filtration applications where, depending on the percentage of solids and cake build-up properties, clearances may reach 100 mm. Hence, polishing filters accommodate more plates than cake filters so for the same vessel size more effective area is available with polishers. [Pg.204]

The materials of construction, from the cupboard to the fan, should be inorganic and resistant to attack by perchloric acid. For the cupboard itself suitable materials include stainless steel of types, 316 or 317, solid epoxy resin, and rigid PVC. Stainless steel has been popular for this application as it is easy to form, weld, and polish. It is, however, attacked by the acid, which causes discoloration of the metal surface and the formation of iron(III) perchlorate, which can be explosive. Ductwork, separate from other extract systems, is usually made from stainless steel or plastic materials. Fire regulations may preclude the use of plastic ductwork or require it to be sheathed in an outer casing of metal or GRP. The fan casing and impeller can both be made of plastic. [Pg.887]
