More details on appliance markets are given in Chapter 2, together with some data on the sensors in question. There has been some recent research into the markets of modern micromechanical sensors in household appliances, documenting the market potential for various types of sensors in this area, including those for pressure, acceleration and tilt, thermopiles, flow and gas sensors [3]. Examples of future developments will also be given.

In addition to developing products for the domestic appliance market, Heraeus Sensor-Nite is also active in the automotive sector, and in the fields of calorimetry, electronics and medicine. The goal that Sensor-Nite has set itself for both its present and future activities is to increase process safety whilst reducing depletion of resources. 

In Fig. 6.1, an attempt is made to show to what extent sensors have been penetrating the appliance market over the past years, a trend which is set to continue in the next decade. In the beginning, there were relatively simple sensors for temperature, pressure, flow, etc. Over the last years, non-contact measuring devices have attracted much attention, such as non-contact temperature monitoring for toasters or for hair blowers. The introduction of more complex sensor systems, such as water quality sensors or multi gas sensing artificial noses is imminent.

Technically the household, entertainment office appliance market appears heterogeneous, including a variety of functionalities, shapes, forms and properties. Table 2.34 proposes a classification method based on the lifetime and the main function but many other classifications are possible.

Among them a typical example is the UL requirements related to the longterm service temperature and the fire rating. 

Global consumption of PPEs is estimated at 350000-500000 t/year, mainly in the automotive, electrical electronics, business machine appliance markets.

New major appliances are difficult to develop. The last new major appliance to be marketed was the trash compactor, which followed the dryer introduced 35 years earlier. The appliance market exceeded the 10 billion dollar mark in 1980. The number of major producers has decreased in recent years through acquisitions and mergers, so that today there are five major producers who account for the biggest market share. For example, in refrigerators, four suppliers share 93% of the market. 

Impact modified polypropylene is used for injection molding automotive, consumer and appliance parts. For example, the medium impact PP is widely used for automotive interior trim. High impact PP is used for battery cases, fender and truck liners. Impact PP is also used extensively in the houseware and appliance markets. 

Applications for PPO resins include television and communication components such as terminal blocks and deflection yokes. Plumbing and automotive parts such as handles, vents, and brackets are a major end use. Housings, particularly those molded in the structural foam configurations, dominate the business machine and appliance market. 

The domestic appliance market covers, among other products, many housings for electrical gadgets. It is instructive to consider how the functional effectiveness of such products would be affected by an absence of additives. 

A lead battery is an accumulator in which the electrodes consist primarily of lead, while a diluted sulfuric acid is used as an electrolyte. The lead is used in the form of bivalent and quadrivalent compounds (PbS04 and Pb02) and as a porous lead sponge for active masses, as well as in the form of lead-antimony or lead-calcium alloys for grids in lead batteries. The level of use of lead batteries in the portable appliance market is low. The main areas of application are starter and drive batteries as well as for uninterrupted power supply to stationary systems. 

Adhesives are used widely in the construction of small and large appliances. The appliance market requires fastening, joining and assembly of parts made of a wide variety of substrates. Adhesives for these components must withstand heat or cold, deaden sound, and absorb vibration. 

A typical mixture of a general molding compound is shown in Table 12, and a sheet molding formulation is given in Table 13. Sheet molding compounds are in increasing demand in automotive, transportation, construction and appliance markets. These phenolics are nonflammable and give off little smoke, unlike poly esters.
