Lead sponge

The lead-acid cell can be represented schematically as having a negative electrode of porous lead (lead sponge) and a positive electrode of lead dioxide, Pb02, both immersed in an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid ... [Pg.143]

We will have to suppose that the lead sponge occurring at the lead cathode reduces the nitrobenzene to aniline. Men-tionable quantities of lead sulphate cannot be found, since this is continually reconverted to lead sponge by the freed hydrogen ions. This process is analogous to the one previously published by me3 in which a hydro-alcoholic solution of nitrobenzene acidified with sulphuric acid gives aniline when a zinc cathode is used. Considerable quantities of zinc sulphate do not occur. At a platinum cathode, under the same conditions, no aniline is formed, but azoxybenzene and hydrazobenzene or benzidine form. This has been confirmed by Haussermann. 4... [Pg.142]

In these sponge studies every care was taken to secure the identification of the material. The results obtained were unsuspected leading to additional concern to secure the correct taxonomy. Incidentally, the two investigations last mentioned were coauthored by P. R. Bergquist, one of the internationally leading sponge taxonomists and the material was collected in New Zealand waters, her domestic area. The risk of misidentification is thus minimal. [Pg.718]

Hydrone . An alloy of 35% Na and 65% Pb. Small, irregular lumps which on contact with water yield pure hydrogen gas (2.6 cu ft per lb) leaves a residue of lead-sponge and NaOH soln. [Pg.762]

A lead battery is an accumulator in which the electrodes consist primarily of lead, while a diluted sulfuric acid is used as an electrolyte. The lead is used in the form of bivalent and quadrivalent compounds (PbS04 and Pb02) and as a porous lead sponge for active masses, as well as in the form of lead-antimony or lead-calcium alloys for grids in lead batteries. The level of use of lead batteries in the portable appliance market is low. The main areas of application are starter and drive batteries as well as for uninterrupted power supply to stationary systems. [Pg.499]

Lead(IV) oxide is an essential constituent of the lead-acid accumulator. A single cell of the battery consists of one electrode of lead sponge and the other of a mesh of lead which is impregnated with lead(IV) oxide. The electrolyte is strong sulphuric acid. [Pg.121]

Evidence for an intermediate metaphosphorimidate is also provided by a three-phase experiment110b,139) treatment of a suspension of the two functionalized polymers 203 and 205 in dioxane with proton sponge leads to formal transfer of a phosphorodiamidate moiety from 203 to 205 with formation of 206. It appears... [Pg.119]
