Predisposing factors

Predisposing factors in postoperative cases are related both to preoperative patient factors and operative complications. External infections including blepharitis and [Pg.349]

In traumatic globe injury, the incidence of infection depends on the type of trauma. City dwellers rarely develop endophthalmitis because of the nature of their injuries in this group, infections occur in only 1% to 2% of eyes following trauma. Intraocular foreign bodies become infected in 11% to 17% of the reported cases (4,5). Endophthalmitis following trauma that occurs in a rural setting may complicate as many as 30% of penetrating ocular injuries (6). [Pg.350]

The predisposing factors are similar with all intravenous anaesthetics. This was the experience of several groups, including Clarke et al. (1978) and ourselves (Assem 1977 b). The reactions were most frequent in asthmatic and allergic patients (suffering from other allergies). They were particularly frequent in those who had a previous anaesthesia within the preceding few weeks, especially if it was with the same anaesthetic. [Pg.259]

The 17 patients who survived the dialysis with contaminated dialysate were significantly younger than those who died (Table 1) and the average body weight in the non-survivors was almost 30 kg below that of the survivors [17], Diabetes mellitus was more frequent in the non-survivors than in the survivors (60 vs. 16%, P — 0.11), as was the proportion being anuric (80 vs. 47%, P — 0.12). Survivors tended to have higher serum PTH concentrations (survivors, 308 84 pg/mL non-survivors, 125 55 pg/mL, normal, 11 to 62 pg/mL). Shortly after the intoxication, the mean corpuscular volume in the patients was low (70.25 6.22, normal 81-99 fL) in seventeen patients. [Pg.9]

1 - - Abnormal ground pattern. Delta activity with a maximum bilateral frontoparietal and also bilateral synchronous spikes and triphasic waves  [Pg.10]

3 1189 — Abnormal ground pattern. More or less continuous slow to very slow peak waves  [Pg.10]

4 725 Normal ground pattern. Left central sharp theta waves (middle high)  [Pg.10]

6 Some periods of slower high voltage activity, bilateral synchronous with some frontal intermittent recurrent delta activity  [Pg.10]

Small particles are required, to provide a large surface-area-to-mass ratio and for the solid to remain in suspension. Surface absorption of air (oxygen) by the solid, or tlie evolution of combustible gas or vapour on heating, may be a predisposing factor. The presence of moisture reduces the tendency to ignite it also favours agglomeration to produce larger particles. An increase in the proportion of inert solid in particles tends to reduce combustibility. [Pg.181]

A furuncle is a bacterial infection that has spread into the subcutaneous skin layers but still only involves individual follicles. Furuncles occur primarily in young men. DM and obesity are other predisposing factors. Staphylococci are the most common cause. [Pg.1077]

Uric acid nephrolithiasis occurs in 10% to 25% of patients with gout. Predisposing factors include excessive urinary excretion of uric acid, acidic urine, and highly concentrated urine. [Pg.15]

The strongest predisposing factor for nosocomial pneumonia is mechanical ventilation. Risk is increased by prior antibiotic use, use of H2-receptor antagonists, and severe illness. [Pg.486]

The occurrence of seizures with bupropion is dose related and may be increased by predisposing factors (e.g., history of head trauma or CNS tumor). At the ceiling dose (450 mg/day), the incidence of seizures is 0.4%. Other side effects include nausea, vomiting, tremor, insomnia, dry mouth, and skin reactions. It is contraindicated in patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa. [Pg.799]

In an earlier chapter we called attention to the large inborn anatomical differences in the size and pattern of blood vessels which carry blood from the heart to the brain. This could be an important predisposing factor in senile dementia since a mild arteriosclerosis involving small arteries could be more than the equivalent of a severe arteriosclerosis when the arteries are relatively large. [Pg.256]

Predisposing factors for low back pain include osteoporosis, trauma and pregnancy. [Pg.209]

Advanced age is a common predisposing factor to the development of osteoporosis. [Pg.252]

Steroid psychosis Steroid psychosis is characterized by a delirious or toxic psychosis with clouded sensorium. Other symptoms may include euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and severe depression. The onset of symptoms usually occurs within 15 to 30 days. Predisposing factors include doses greater than prednisone 40 mg equivalent, female predominance, and, possibly, a family history of psychiatric illness. [Pg.264]

Seizure disorders Because TCAs lower the seizure threshold, use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or other predisposing factors (eg, brain damage of varying etiology, alcoholism, concomitant drugs known to lower the seizure threshold). However, seizures have occurred both in patients with and without a history of seizure disorders. Seizure was identified as the most significant risk of clomipramine use. [Pg.1039]

Sudden death Previous brain damage or seizures may be predisposing factors avoid high doses in known seizure patients. [Pg.1102]
