The spin transistor as represented in Fig. 34 is a vertical spin transistor. Figure 35 is a schematic picture of a lateral spin transistor as originally proposed by Datta and Das [179]. In this case, a iron emitter injects spins into a 2D electron gas. A Schottky gate can rotate the spin polarization by the Rashba effect, and another iron analyzer detects transmitted spin polarized current. 

Samples from ocean floor fauna (rat tail fish and sea cucumbers) taken in 1971 from two munitions dumping areas located in the Pacific Ocean (85 miles west of Cape Flattery, Washington) and the Atlantic Ocean (172 miles south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina) were analyzed for tetryl (Navy 1972). No tetryl was found in any of the fauna samples analyzed (detection limit of 740 ppt). 

Methane (contained in natural gas) and carbon monoxide also make good surrogates because they are relatively easy to obtain, handle, and meter. Furthermore, common CEM analyzers detecting CO and unburned hydrocarbons (UBH) can be used to measure their presence for determining destruction removal efficiency.

CE-MS has been used in analyses of anions and cations as a method simultaneously providing positive identification and quantitation. CE-ESI MS is particularly well suited for analyses of quaternary ammonium salts. Speciation analysis of As can be carried out using a CE-ICP-MS. Problems in interfacing the ICP-MS detection to CE are associated with low flow rates and small samples analyzed. Detection limits in ppb region can be attained, using postcapillary hybridization prior to ICP-MS. 

Energy-dispersion X-ray analysis (EDXRF) is similar in nature to WDXRF, but the X-rays emitted from the sample are absorbed (simultaneously for multielement composites) by a solid-state detector and pluse-height analyzer. Detection limits are usually in the parts-per-million range, but quantification limits are about 50 times less than in WDXRF.

All liquid cells using a small sample pathlength have very limited material capability throughout. This could cause significant lag time between the actual process concentration change and the analyzer detecting it. Reduction of the bypass volume is desirable to minimize the lag time. Reduction of the dead volume of the sample cell reduces the washout time and the back-mixing of the old sample with the fresh. 

Dynamic SIMS has long been an established technique for the detection of low concentration species in bulk samples (e.g. dopant levels in semiconductors). While the sample is being sputtered (see Sec. 2.3), a quadrupole mass analyzer detects the resulting fragments in real time, resulting in a depth profile of the desired species in the sample or, with calibration, an indication of the concentration of the desired species in the bulk of the sample. The method is fast and simple, but a quadrupole mass analyzer can only tune into one particular mass-to-charge ratio at a time, or... 

Determination of intrathyroidal iodine content is obtained from a calibration curve established on assays performed with a thyroid phantom (Fig. 2A) and validated by comparing the results obtained with those of chemical analysis of surgery specimens (Fig. 2B).
