If the injected acid itself contains iron (III), a precipitation of the asphaltic products can occur when it comes in contact with certain crude oils. This leads to practically irreversible damage of the zone treated. The amount of precipitate generally increases with the strength and concentration of the acid. Certain organic sulfur compounds, such as ammonium thioglycolate, mercaptoethanol, cysteamine, thioglycerol, cysteine, and thiolactic acid [581], can reduce the iron (HI). [Pg.200]

Biomass may also sorb As(III) from water. Teixeira and Ciminelli (2005) removed considerable As(III) with ground chicken feathers treated with ammonium thioglycolate. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra indicate that the adsorbed arsenic is still in the +3 valence state and that each atom is bound to three sulfur atoms associated with reduced cysteine amino acids (HC>2CCH(NH2)CH2SH) in the feathers. At pH 5 and biomass dosages of 2.0gL 1, the sorption capacity of the material was as high as 0.265 mmol As(III) g-1 biomass (19.9 mg As(III) g-1 biomass Table 7.2). The presence of 0.01 mol L-1 of phosphate had only minor effects on the sorption capacity, which was 0.260 mmol As(III) g 1 biomass (19.5 mg As(III) g-1 biomass) (Teixeira and Ciminelli, 2005, 898). [Pg.387]

Sensitizer. A chemical that causes vulnerable, exposed individuals to develop a respiratory allergic reaction following repeated exposure. Methylene bisphenyl isocyanate, toluene diisocyanate, and trimellitic anhydride are examples of respiratory sensitizers. It should be noted that sensitizing chemicals that are inhaled have the propensity to also induce dermal sensitization and that skin exposure to sensitizers (e.g., ammonium thioglycolate) can induce respiratory sensitization. Such cross-sensitization is discussed below and in Chapter 29. [Pg.262]

For the softwave product, the neutralizer described in Table 3-3 for the ammonium thioglycolate wave can also be used for a bisulhte system. [Pg.140]

Among the different thioglycolate salts, monoethanolamine thioglycolate is reported to be less irritating to skin than ammonium thioglycolate... [Pg.148]

Although ammonium thioglycolate has been reported as having a low sensitization potential [145], a few incidents of sensitization have been reported among hairdressers where contact is frequent [145]. [Pg.148]
