Twenty-four hundred grams (25.6 mol) of phenol, 1645 g of 37 wt % formaldehyde (20.3 mol), and 30 g (0.33 mol) of oxalic acid were charged to a 5-L, three-necked resin kettle. The mixture was stirred and refluxed until the distillate was free of formaldehyde (1-3 h) then water was distilled from the mixture until the resin temperature reached 154°C. The viscosity of the resin at this point at 150°C was such diat 105 s was required for flow in an inclined plate test. The pressure was slowly reduced while a slow current of nitrogen was bubbled through the resin, and the mixture was heated to 175°C at 6 mm Hg. Approximately 6 wt % phenol was recovered then the resin was poured into an aluminum dish and cooled. The resin had a melt viscosity of 510 s at 150°C. [Pg.430]

A schematic of the two-dimensional test apparatus with three draft tubes is shown in Fig. 12. The two-dimensional bed is constructed with transparent Plexiglas plates in the front and aluminum plates at the back with a cross-section of 50.8 cm by 2.54 cm and 244 cm high. The three draft tubes have a cross-sectional area of 2.54 cm by 2.54 cm each and 91 cm high. The three draft tubes divide the bed into four separate downcomers. The two downcomers next to the side walls have a cross-section of 5.9 cm by 2.54 cm while the remaining two downcomers have a cross-section exactly two times, i.e., 11.8 cm by 2.54 cm. If all three draft tubes operate similarly, the bed should have three identical cells, each with a single draft tube. The work function of the rubbing surfaces and the electron affinity of additives are interconnected on the molecular level. This mechanism has been discussed in terms of tribopolymerization models as a general approach to boundary lubrication (Kajdas 1994, 2001). To evaluate the validity of the anion-radical mechanism, two metal systems were investigated, a hard steel ball on a softer steel plate and a hard ball on an aluminum plate. Both metal plates emit electrons under friction, but aluminum produced more exoelectrons than steel. With aluminum, the addition of 1% styrene to the hexadecane lubricating fluid reduced the wear volume of the plate by over 65%. This effect considerably predominates that of steel on steel. Friction initiates polymerization of styrene, and this polymer formation was proven. It was also found that lauryl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate, and vinyl acetate reduced wear in an aluminum pin-on-disc test by 60-80% (Kajdas 1994). [Pg.426]

A convenient method to produce porous surfaces is the anodic oxidation of aluminum plates. Such microstructured aluminum platelets have been coated by wet impregnation with Pt-, V- and Zr-precursors [35], and tested under catalytic methane combustion conditions. Packed tower studies were made with a borosilicate glass column 4 inches in inside diameter packed with /4-inch ceramic Intalox saddles. The feed was metered through a rotameter from a constant-head tank, and distributed through the tower with a perforated aluminum plate. There have been a number of previous attempts to relate the appearance of higher harmonics in the transmission of ultrasound through bonded structures to the quahty of the bonds [2-9]. Commonly used is the so-called nonhnearity parameter y 2, a measure of the generation of only the second harmonic [2], and the distortion factor K which describes the complete nonlinear content of the response [7]. In this paper cahbrated measurements on samples consisting of two aluminum plates joined together by a thin epoxy layer are presented and discussed. The amphtudes and phases of the ultrasonic waves transmitted through the bond are considered. The measurements are related to the results of destructive tensile tests of the adhesive layer. [Pg.404]
