Inulin based alkyd resins

A synthesis procedure for the sucrose and inulin based alkyd resins was developed by dissolving non-modified or partially acetylated sucrose or inulin in DMAA (N,N-dimethylacetamide), adding sunflower oil or methyl linoleate and reacting the mixture at 140 °C. Catalysts such as potassium carbonate or lithium hydroxide were found to be the most effective.

The most promising binder systems were synthesised at 500 -2000 gram scale and used to prepare paint formulations. Characteristics of paint formulations based on inulin type alkyd resins are shown in Table I. 

Within the framework of a research project together with Dutch based paint producer SigmaKalon, the development of alkyd resins with low intrinsic viscosity was aimed for. In order to achieve this, we explored the potential of two types of renewable, carbohydrate derived resources as the polyhydric alcohol part of alkyd resins, i.e. sucrose and inulin.
