Sucrose based alkyd resins

Characteristics of high solid alkyd paint formulations containing sucrose based alkyd resins are shown in Table II.

A synthesis procedure for the sucrose and inulin based alkyd resins was developed by dissolving non-modified or partially acetylated sucrose or inulin in DMAA (N,N-dimethylacetamide), adding sunflower oil or methyl linoleate and reacting the mixture at 140 °C. Catalysts such as potassium carbonate or lithium hydroxide were found to be the most effective. 

Sucrose acetate isobutyrate su- kr6s a-9- tat - byii-t3- rat (SAIB) n. A modifying extender for lacquers and finishes based on resins such as cellulose acetate butyrate, acrylics, alkyds, and polyesters. 

US 3,870,664 and US 3,870,664 to Research Corporation New York disclose oil modified sucrose resins obtainable by reaction of a partial esterified sucrose ester with a cyclic dicarboxylic anhydride and a diepoxide. Although this work mentions alkyd resins based on renewables, it is not specifically aimed at deriving high solid alkyd paints based on resins with a low intrinsic viscosity. 

Within the framework of a research project together with Dutch based paint producer SigmaKalon, the development of alkyd resins with low intrinsic viscosity was aimed for. In order to achieve this, we explored the potential of two types of renewable, carbohydrate derived resources as the polyhydric alcohol part of alkyd resins, i.e. sucrose and inulin. " These carbohydrate based resources were chosen because of various reasons ... 

Resins from "penta"-substituted esters were superior to corresponding materials from lower substituted esters. The best coatings were obtained from resins based on sucrose "penta -dehydrated castor esters. A titanium dioxide paint of a system of this type, therefore, was evaluated in more detail. For comparison purposes,a typical drying oil alkyd paint also was tested. The results (Table VI) show that the performance of both resins is similar.
