Alertness

A more sophisticated and increasingly popular method of on-condItion maintenance is to monitor the performance of equipment on-line. For example, a piece of rotating equipment such as a turbine may be monitored for vibration and mechanical performance (speed, inlet and outlet pressure, throughput). If a base-line performance is established, then deviations from this may indicate that the turbine has a mechanical problem which will reduce its performance or lead to failure. This would be used to alert the operators that some form of repair is required. [Pg.289]

Wliatever the deteetion teehnique, the window stage of the 4WM event must eonvert these evolved vibrational wavepaekets into the third order polarization field that oseillates at an ensemble distribution of optieal frequeneies. One must be alert to the possibility that the window event after doorway ehaimel B may involve resonanees from eleetronie state manifold e to some higher manifold, say r. Thus ehaimel B followed by an e (ket) or a (bra) event might be enlianeed by an e-to-r resonanee. However, it is nonnal to eonfine the... [Pg.1202]

Much of the communication between insects involves chemical messengers called pheromones A species of cockroach secretes a substance from its mandibular glands that alerts other cockroaches to its presence and causes them to congregate One of the principal components of this aggregation pheromone is the alkane shown in the bond line formula that follows Give the molecular formula of this substance and represent it by a condensed formula... [Pg.68]

In practical terms, a company can foUow the trends ia its markets on a monthly or quarterly basis. Changes ia customer patterns ia terms of quantities, grades, or payment alert management to seek causative factors and take appropriate action. [Pg.534]

Several nontechnical factors can significantly affect the results of a nondestmctive inspection. Many of these are classified as human factors (1,2,17). Operator experience affects the probabiUty of detection of most flaws. Typically, an inexperienced operator has more false rejects, known as Type II errors, than an experienced operator. A poor operator has few false rejects but is more likely to miss a defect in the inspection, known as a Type I error. Operator fatigue, boredom, or an unfavorable environment such as lighting, cold, or rain may further affect performance. Thus it usually is a good investment for the inspection company to assure that the operator environment is most amenable to inspection, that the equipment is suitable for the task, and that the operator is alert and well rested. [Pg.123]

Derwent Information Ltd. Derwent Information Ltd., previously known as Derwent PubHcations Ltd., changed its name in the 1990s to reflect more accurately the fact that its products go far beyond traditional pubHcations. Derwent provides a wide spectmm of information products and services, many of them relating to patents. Derwent also produces important databases (qv) of nonpatent information from the pharmaceutical and agncultural chemical Hterature. These products and services encompass alerting tools for current awareness, systems for retrospective search and retneval, and means for document deHvery and archiving. [Pg.51]

Traditional paging through patent office gazettes and printed abstract bulletins stiU serves a usefiil purpose in patent alerting. It can be difficult to frame a query for a computer search on all the subject matter that might be of interest to an organization. The human mind can spot unanticipated material and relate it to interests, something presendy beyond the power of the computer. [Pg.58]

Most new patent cases of interest are pubHshed by at least one of the U.S., European, or Japanese patent offices, and WIPO (PCT). Japan presents problems for those not able to read Japanese, but the U.S. Official Ga tte (with representative claims) and PCT Ga tte (with English-language abstracts) can be in one s hands within a week of patent pubHcation. Similar timing is available for the European Patent Office bulletin which contains trilingual tides and the on-line EPAT file and various CD-ROM products. A highly effective alerting program can be developed from a combination of these methods. [Pg.58]
