Exercise alertness

Caution statements appear in many of the exercises, alerting students to potential pitfalls... 

Subcontracts enable you to choose the degree of control exercised over your subcontractors. With suppliers, your choices are often limited as you have no privileges. Control over your suppliers is therefore exercised by the results of receipt inspection or subsequent inspections and tests. If your confidence in a supplier is low, you can increase the level of inspection and if high you can dispense with receipt inspection and rely on in-process controls to alert you to any deterioration in supplier performance. 

As is stated in the standard, all characteristics are important and need to be controlled. However, some need special attention as excessive variation may affect product safety, compliance with government regulations, fit, form, function, appearance, or the quality of subsequent operations. Designating such characteristics with special symbols alerts planners and operators to take particular care. It also alerts those responsible for dispo-sitioning nonconforming product to exercise due care when reaching their decisions. 

StevensJohnson syndrome isa serious and sometimes fatal hypetsenslivity reaction. The nurse must be alert for lesions on the skin and mucous membranes , a diagnostically important symptom of this syndrome. The lesons appear as red wheats or blisters , often starting on the face, in the mouth, or on the lips neck, and extremities This syndrome, which also may occur with the administration of other types of drugs can be fatal. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a safety alert in 1994 in response to two deaths associated with calcium-phosphate precipitation in PN.16 Autopsy reports from these patients revealed diffuse micro vascular pulmonary emboli containing calcium-phosphate precipitates. Because calcium and phosphate can bind and precipitate in solution, caution must be exercised when mixing these two electrolytes in PN admixtures. Upon completion of exercises 3.5 and 3.6, you probably noticed that not all written works in journals strictly adhere to the move structure in figure 3.1. Not surprisingly, the move structure does not apply to genres intended for a more general audience (e.g., news alerts, book reviews, editorial remarks), nor does it apply to all research-related works. We have things that help us to remain alert. Caffeine in coffee and in tablet form prevents dozing and sleep, as do some prescription drugs. Unexpected stimuli, including noise and even pain, can help, and sometimes aerobic exercise. A useful distinction here is between staying awake and enhancing awareness. 

You may not give this one top priority, but many believe the stronger you remain physically and the more alert you remain mentally, the fewer accidents you will have. Home accidents, like falling in the shower or bathtub, are too common among retirees. Those who exercise regularly, even in modest amounts, are in better shape to avoid such accidents.

Interestingly, strenuous physical exercise has an excellent double effect on our dopa/norepi levels. When you start to jog, bicycle, or lift weights, you may notice that your sluggish mood dissipates and you feel energized, powerful, and alert. That s because the mere act of using your muscles cues your brain to release more dopa/norepi into your system, and your hormone levels rise. Then the prolonged exercise uses up these... 

Repeat this practice daily, or as often as you like. You might consider adding someone new each time, either from your memory or from your daily experiences. Stay alert as you move through each day, seeking a new person whom you might add to this exercise.
