Pyridyl)hydrazine (Aldrich), 4-acetylpyridine (Acros), N,N,N -trimethylethylenediamine (Aldrich), methylrhenium trioxide (Aldrich), InQj (Aldrich), Cu(N0j)2-3H20 (Merck), Ni(N03)2-6Il20 (Merck), Yb(OTf)3(Fluka), Sc(OTf)3 (Fluka), 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine (Acros), benzylideneacetone (Aldrich), and chalcone (Aldrich) were of the highest purity available. Borane dimethyl sulfide (2M solution in THE) was obtained from Aldrich. Methyl vinyl ketone was distilled prior to use. Cyclopentadiene was prepared from its dimer immediately before use. (R)-l-acetyl-5-isopropoxy-3-pyrrolin-2-one (4.15) has been kindly provided by Prof H. Hiemstra (University of Amsterdam). 

Big name science houses and chemical manufacturers These include such names as Fisher, Baxter, VWR, Cole-Parmer, Alltech, Aldrich and Sigma. It is very hard to get a fledgling account with these giants, but if one can then the sky s the limit. Most chemists should be happy getting these companies products through the distributors. 

For the past year Strike had been in consultation with contract labs over the making of phenylisopropyl alcohols using sulfuric acid and allylbenzenes (don t ask). The lab owners would listen patiently as Strike primitively described how and why an OH should go on the beta carbon. And without exception, the lab owners would point out to Strike that the best way to get an OH on the beta carbon would be to put a Br there first. But Strike don t wanna put a Br there first Strike would say, Strike wants the OH put on directly using sulfuric acid " The lab guys had to do what Strike said because Strike was holding all the money (...a fool and her money etc.). But out of curiosity Strike asked how they would get that Br on the beta carbon. Every one of them said it was simply a matter of using the 48% HBr in acetic acid. They even showed Strike their stock solutions (usually from Aldrich or Fisher).

Cobalt difluoride, used primarily for the manufacture of cobalt trifluoride, CoF, is available from Advance Research Chemicals, Inc., Aldrich Chemicals, and PCR in the United States, Fluorochem in the UK, and Schuhardt in Germany. The 1993 price varied from 60 to 200/kg depending on the quantity and the price of cobalt metal. C0F2 is shipped as a corrosive and toxic material in DOT-approved containers. 

In spite of the many appHcations for copper(II) fluoride, demand is restricted to 1 to 10 kg lots. It is available ia the United States from Advance Research Chemicals, Aldrich Chemicals, Atomergic, Aesar, Johnson/Matthey, Cerac Corp., and PCR Corp. The 1993 price for the anhydrous copper(II) fluoride varied from 400 to 600/kg depending on the amount required. The dihydrate is available at 22/kg. 

The only reported industrial appHcation for Fep2 is its use in mst removal solutions based on oxalic acid (6). The anhydrous salt is commercially available in 100 g to 5 kg lots from Advance Research Chemicals, Aldrich Chemicals, Cerac, Johnson/Matthey, PCR, and other suppHers in the United States. As of 1993, the prices varied between 500 to 700/kg. 

High purity lead difluoride is available from Advance Research Chemicals, Aldrich Chemicals, Johnson/Matthey, Atomergic, Cerac, and other supphers ia the United States. The U.S. annual consumption varies between 500 to 2500 kg/yr. The 1993 price varied between 10—20/kg. 

Several preparatory methods for the manufacture of Hg2p2 have been reported (5). Whereas no commercial appHcations for Hg2p2 have been reported, it is available from Advance Research Chemicals and Aldrich Chemicals in the United States. As of 1993, the U.S. market was a few kilograms per year at a price of 1500/kg. 

This material is produced on pilot-plant scale and the U.S. annual consumption is less than 50 kg/yr. As of 1993, the price was 1500/kg. It is available from Advance Research Chemicals Inc., Aldrich Chemicals, Atomergic, Cerac, Johnson/Matthey, Pfalt2 Bauer, and Strem Chemicals. 

Historically, the annual consumption of nickel fluoride was on the order of a few metric tons. Usage is droppiag because nickel fluoride is Hsted ia the EPA and TSCA s toxic substance iaventory. Nickel fluoride tetrahydrate is packaged ia 200—500-lb (90.7—227-kg) dmms and the 1993 price was 22/kg. Small quantities for research and pilot-plant work are available from Advance Research Chemicals, Aldrich Chemicals, Johnson/Matthey, Pfalt2 and Bauer, PCR, and Strem Chemicals of the United States, Fluorochem of the United Kingdom, and Morita of Japan. 

Uses. Silver fluoride has found many laboratory and special industrial appHcations. It is used as a soft (nHld) fluorinating agent for selective fluorination (7—17), as a cathode material in batteries (qv) (18), and as an antimicrobial agent (19). Silver fluoride is commercially available from Advance Research Chemicals, Inc., Aldrich Chemicals, Cerac Corp., Johnson/Matthey, PCR, Atochem, and other sources in the United States. The U.S. price of silver fluoride in 1993 was 1000— 1400/kg and the total U.S. consumption was less than 200 kg/yr. 

Johnson—Matthey/AESAR group, Aldrich Chemical, and EM Industries, Inc. Ultrahigh purity (99.999%) material is available only from Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. of Allentown, Peimsylvania. The price varies depending on the purity of the material from 25/kg (99%) through 250/kg (99.99%), to 1500—2500/kg (99.999%). Consumption of ZrF in the United States is less than 5000 kg/yr.

Optically Active PO. The synthesis of optically pure PO has been accompHshed by microbial asymmetric reduction of chloroacetone [78-95-5] (90). (3)-2-Meth5loxirane [16088-62-3] (PO) can be prepared in 90% optical purity from ethyl (3)-lactate in 44% overall yield (91). This method gives good optical purity from inexpensive reagents without the need for chromatography or a fermentation step. (3)-PO is available from Aldrich Chemical Company, having a specific rotation [0 ] ° 7.2 (c = 1, CHCl ).
