Of these sources, Kirk-Othmer s Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is particularly recommended for questions on chemistry and on end uses. For information on properties and on toxicity and handling hazards, Patty s Industrial Hygiene, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and the Aldrich catalog are very nseful. Questions on industrial chemistry should be directed to Ullman s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, and the texts by Chenier, Heaton, and White. Hawley s Condensed Chemical Dictionary is valuable as a source for dehnitions of the terms (language) of chemistry.

The company makes many compounds, some not yet listed in the other handbooks, and often gives structures and physical constants for them. As Aldrich is in the business of selling chemicals to industry, many industrial references are given. 

Users can easily search the CD-ROM by employing the Aldrich catalog number, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, chemical name, or molecular formula. One can also export the chemical structures to some supported software for subsequent inclusion into word processing programs. This compound is mislabelled and misdrawn in the 1987 and 1988 Aldrich catalogs as the S-enantiomer. 

In contrast, one need not consult an Aldrich catalog to see if r-butyl radical is commercially available. Nor can one generate a significant quantity of r-butyl radical in solution prior to the addition of a reagent with which it is destined to react. This is because r-butyl radical, like nearly every other radical that is employed in synthesis, is transient. The lifetime of a transient radical rarely exceeds 1 ps and is limited by the rate of self reaction. This self reaction, which can be either a disproportionation or a recombination (Scheme 2), typically occurs at the diffusion-controlled limit the enthalpy of activation of most radical-radical reactions = 0 kcal mol-1.

It must not be in the Aldrich catalog, and it must be clearly labeled. We don t analyze for the library, but we buy only from reputable researchers. Maybe 2 or 3 percent of the compounds are not what the researcher thought 20 or 30 years ago, and about 10% are not very pure. 

Many of the chemicals used in this course will be unfamiliar to you. Their properties can be looked up in reference books, a very useful one being the Aldrich Catalog Handbook of Fine Chemicals. It is interesting to note that 1,4-dichlorobenzene is listed as a toxic irritant and naphthalene is listed as an irritant. Both are used as moth balls. Camphor, used in vaporizers, is classified as a flammable solid irritant. Salicylic acid, which we will use to synthesize aspirin (Chapter 26) is listed as moisture-sensitive toxic. Aspirin (acetylsalicyclic acid) is classified as an irritant. Caffeine, which we will isolate from tea or cola syrup (Chapter 8), is classified as toxic. Substances not so familiar to you—1-naphthol and benzoic acid—are classified respectively as toxic irritants and irritant. To put things in some perspective, nicotine is classified as highly toxic. ...
