The sales brochures of the manufacturers describe the plasticizer range alcohols available on the merchant market (18). Typical properties of several commercial plasticizer range alcohols are presented in Table 8. Because in most cases these ate mixtures of isomers or alcohols with several carbon chains, the properties of a particular material can vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer. Both odd and even carbon chain alcohols are available, in both linear and highly branched versions. Examples of the composition of several mixtures are given in Table 9. [Pg.445]

The nitro alcohols available in commercial quantities are manufactured by the condensation of nitroparaffins with formaldehyde [50-00-0]. These condensations are equiUbrium reactions, and potential exists for the formation of polymeric materials. Therefore, reaction conditions, eg, reaction time, temperature, mole ratio of the reactants, catalyst level, and catalyst removal, must be carefully controlled in order to obtain the desired nitro alcohol in good yield (6). Paraformaldehyde can be used in place of aqueous formaldehyde. A wide variety of basic catalysts, including amines, quaternary ammonium hydroxides, and inorganic hydroxides and carbonates, can be used. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture must be made acidic, either by addition of mineral acid or by removal of base by an ion-exchange resin in order to prevent reversal of the reaction during the isolation of the nitro alcohol (see Ion exchange). [Pg.61]

The tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol available from the Quaker Oats Company, or the Practical grade from the Eastman Kodak Company, has been used. If the material a ailable does not hydrogenate satisfactorily, it may be purified by hydrogenation over Raney nickel at 150 /100-200 atmospheres pressure. The sodium methoxide solution is prepared as follows- 203 g. of methyl alcohol, available from Fisher Scientific Company, is placed in a 500-ml., two-necked flask under an inert atmosphere.
