Comparative quantitation

First, the rates of carbonylation of secondary and tertiary alkyl carbonium ions can now be compared quantitatively with the known rates of competing intramolecular rearrangements of these ions. The product distribution in the Koch synthesis of carboxylic acids depends, amongst other things, on these relative rates. [Pg.51]

Because the sense, or sign, of chiral asymmetry in the forward-backward electron scattering asymmetry depends on the helicity of the photon and of the molecule, it is essential that these variables are properly specified in any study to permit meaningful comparisons to be made. Discussing and comparing quantitative asymmetry factors, y [Eq. (8)] and dichroism [Eq. (9)] likewise requires agreement on the convention adopted in the definition of these terms. [Pg.324]

GL 22] [R 1] [P 23] The mass transfer efficiency of the falling film micro reactor as a function of the carbon dioxide volume content was compared quantitatively (Figure 5.30) [5]. The molar ratio of carbon dioxide to sodium hydroxide was constant at 0.4 for all experiments, i.e. the liquid reactant was in slight excess. [Pg.640]

It is not usual to talk about the resistance of electrolytes, but rather about their conductance. The specific conductance (K) of an electrolyte is defined as the reciprocal of the resistance of a part of the electrolyte, 1 cm in length and 1 cm2 in cross-sectional area. It depends only on the ions present and, therefore it varies with their concentration. To take the effect of concentration into account, a function called the equivalent conductance, A, is defined. This is more commonly (and conveniently) used than the specific conductance to compare quantitatively the conductivities of electrolytes. The equivalent conductance A is the conductance of that volume of the electrolyte which contains one gram equivalent of the ions taking part in the electrolysis and which is held between parallel electrodes 1 cm apart (units ohm-1 cm4). If V cubic centimeters is the volume of the solution containing one gram equivalent, then the value of L will be 1 cm and the value of A will be V square centimeters, so that... [Pg.608]

Cortes et al. [634] have recently used /rSEC-GC/LC in a comparative quantitative study of dissolution and dissolution/precipitation of PC/(2,4-di-f-butylphenol, nonylphenol isomers, Tinuvin 329, Irgafos 168) and ABS/(nonylphenol isomers, Tinuvin P, BBP, Vanox 2246, Tinuvin 328/770, Topanol CA, Acrawax). For the ABS sample the dissolution approach determined a four-fold higher concentration for Vanox 2246 than by dissolution/precipitation of the sample, indicating that precipitation can yield low (incorrect) results for additives which exhibit solubility dependence. Using both sample preparations equivalent concentrations were observed for the additives of the PC sample, except for Tinuvin 329. [Pg.151]

The cholinesterase-inhibiting activity of the phosphorofluoridates was compared quantitatively with that of eserine sulphate thus. To 0-2 ml. of heparinized human plasma was added 05 ml. of a solution containing either eserine or the phosphorofluoridate in varying concentrations then the mixture was kept at room temperature for 10 min. before 1 /tg. of acetylcholine in 1 c.c. saline solution was added. After 5 min. at room temperature, the mixture was made up to 10 ml. with frog saline containing eserine 1/100,000, which at once stopped the action of any cholinesterase not yet inactivated. The solution was then assayed for acetylcholine on the frog rectus-muscle preparation. [Pg.75]

In conclusion of this short account on experiments, which is clearly far from complete, detailed structural data for solutions will be available in the near future. They may serve well to support theoretical calculations of solvation processes and to present challenges for theoretical considerations, which will in any case have to be dynamic ones. Data which may be compared quantitatively with molecular calculations will, however, have to come from gas-phase solvation experiments. There already exists a great variety of according data and their number will certainly increase further. [Pg.50]
