Fuming nitric acids

The principal applications of these plastics arose from their very good chemical resistance, as they are resistant to mineral acids, strong alkalis and most common solvents. They were, however, not recommended for use in conjunction with oxidising acids such as fuming nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid or chlorosulphonic acid, with fluorine or with some chlorinated solvents, particularly at elevated temperatures.

Such reactions can be promoted by exposing the chromatogram to the vapors of hydrogen halides, to nitric acid fumes [4], to ammonia or oxides of nitrogen [2] in suitable reaction chambers [10]. Ammonium hydrogen carbonate, first proposed by SEGxmA and Gono is also suitable [11].

In the process of Dietzsch Co, a continuous roll of pulp, in the form of a sheet 45cm wide, was passed thru a chamber, countercurrently to the nitric acid fumes and then thru a bath contg coned nitric acid. Before the americium can be precipitated as the oxalate, the acidity of the solution must be lowered.
