Alarm systems, building security

An important principle is that security must be built in depth - otherwise known as defense in depth. In this context, it may be helpful to think of security as a set of concentric rings, where the target is located at the center. Each ring represents a level of physical protection (perimeter fence, building shell, security case) but the number of rings and security resistance will vary relative to the risk. The spaces between the rings may represent other defensive measures such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), security lighting, intruder alarm systems, etc. 

In many cases, it is necessary to complement physical security by the installation of an intruder alarm system in order to achieve the standard of security commensurate to the risk exposure. The scope of protection to be afforded by the alarm system depends on the security risk, but it may embrace fences, windows, doors, roofs, walls, internal areas, yards and external open areas, and vehicles inside and outside buildings. There is a comprehensive range of detection devices, but the choice of detector is critical to ensure that it provides the desired level of protection and is stable in the particular environment. 

A Warehouse System encompassing all aspects of the management and maintenance of the storage facility in line with the relevant regulatory and local health and safety expectations. This will encompass maintenance of standards of cleanliness, sterile areas, temperature, humidity, pest control systems, and physical security (including the restriction of access to controlled drugs). This system may interface with physical alarm systems for the building and other automated access control systems (e.g., swipe-card systems).

Generally, firewalls filter inbound and outbound data, provide or manage public access to requested locations, deny all services except those explicitly permitted by the system administrator, log traffic and activity through the firewall, and activate alarms as prowlers are detected. ... 

An intercom system and telephones in Rooms 104, 106, 107, 111, and 112 accommodate communications within the Hot Cell Facility. The TA-V emergency evacuation system provides immediate notification to all personnel in TA-V to evacuate in the event of a fire, radiological emergency, security problem, or other site-wide problem. The TA-V alarm may be initiated from building exits throughout TA-V. An area-wide public-address system, portable radios, and pagers supplement telephone communication and FAX capabilities to line management, SNL Incident Commander, DOE, and key ES H staff. 

The main sensor controls are typically located in the plant room or security office, but any alarms should be located on mimic panels where they can be clearly seen and acted on by the users of the building. The system should allow recall of alarm events, affected zone, gas concentrations, date and time. There should be a clear indication of the fault zone on the display. The system should be powered by an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) so that it continues to operate even during power cuts. A UPS is a set of batteries and a control unit that senses when electrical power is cut and uses the battery backup to power the system.
