Wide angle X-ray diffraction, WAXD, studies on the PHAs from octanoic acid (PHA-OCT), nonanoic acid (PHA-NON), and decanoic acid (PHA-DEC) showed that these polymers had the same features as synthetic comb-like polymers [54]. PHA-OCT is the most crystalline (AHm = 8.3 cal/g) and PHA-HEX (the PHA from hexanoic acid) is amorphous, while PHA-HEP (the PHA from hep-tanoic acid) has a very low degree of crystallinity (AHm= 1.3 cal/g). The degrees of crystallinity of PHA-OCT and PHA-NON were determined to be 20 and 30%,... 

Results of studies in laboratory animals with 14C-acrylonitrile indicate acrylonitrile is rapidly and extensively absorbed by the oral route. Radiolabeled acrylonitrile is detected in blood within 30 minutes after administration of an oral dose and peak plasma concentrations are reached 6 hours after administration (Farooqui and Ahmed 1982). Extensive absorption is indicated by the fact that only 2 to 10% of administered radioactivity is recovered in the feces (Ahmed et al. 1982, 1983 Farooqui and Ahmed 1982 Young et al. 1977).

Studies indicate that the metabolism of acrylonitrile in animals proceeds by the same pathways whether exposure is by the oral (Ahmed et al. 1983 Langvardt et al. 1980 Pilon et al. 1988a) or the inhalation route (Gutetal. 1985 Muller et al. 1987 Tardif et al. 1987). No data were located regarding the metabolism of acrylonitrile following dermal exposure.

When we compared the viscosities of solutions of natural rubber and of guttapercha and of other elastomers and later of polyethylene vs.(poly)cis-butadiene, with such bulk properties as moduli, densities, X-ray structures, and adhesiveness, we were greatly helped in understanding these behavioral differences by the studies of Wood (6) on the temperature and stress dependent, melting and freezing,hysteresis of natural rubber, and by the work of Treloar (7) and of Flory (8) on the elasticity and crystallinity of elastomers on stretching. Distribution. Cyanide is rapidly distributed by the blood throughout the body. In a study using orally administered radioactively labelled potassium cyanide, radioactivity detected in whole blood or plasma decreased rapidly within 6 hours. Of the low levels of radioactivity detected in the red blood cells, about 94% of the radioactivity recovered was found in the hemolysate of which 70% was detected in the heme fraction, 14-25% in globin, and only 5-10% in cell membranes (Farooqui and Ahmed 1982). Yamamoto et al. (1982) determined that the pattern of distribution of cyanide did not vary with the concentration used. Ballantyne (1983b) observed higher cyanide levels in whole blood than in serum in rabbits exposed dermally to hydrogen cyanide, potassium cyanide, and sodium cyanide. See Section 2.3.2.1 for specific studies on cyanide tissue distribution. 

For the purpose of this case study we will select Isopropyl alcohol as the crystallization solvent and assume that the NRTL-SAC solubility curve for Form A has been confirmed as reasonably accurate in the laboratory. If experimental solubility data is measured in IPA then it can be fitted to a more accurate (but non predictive) thermodynamic model such as NRTL or UNIQUAC at this point, taking care with analysis of the solid phase in equilibrium. As the activity coefficient model only relates to species in the liquid phase we can use the same model with each different set of AHm and Tm data to calculate the solubility of the other polymorphs of Cimetidine, as shown in Figure 21. True polymorphs only differ from each other in the solid phase and are otherwise chemically identical.
