Agranulocjdosis can be asymptomatic and, since it occurs unpredictably, regular monitoring of the leukocjde count is advisable, especially in patients concurrently receiving combination chemotherapy. Two French reports on patients with fatal aplastic anemia stated that the sera contained agglutinating antibodies to red blood cells sensitized with chloramphenicol (Jacottet 1964 Scheegans et al. 1965). During an examination of antichloramphenicol antibodies in two patients, a short half-life was noted by Hamburger and Douglass (1969 b). A relationship between the presence of antibodies to chloramphenicol and the fatal clinical course was not established.

If this is confirmed (that the antibodies were truly immunoglobulins), than the eel s immune system is that of the vertebrate...
