Chemotherapy, combination

A very large study jointly conducted by investigators in France, U.S.A. and Slovenia, and, involving five cancer centres has explored the effectiveness of electric current and chemotherapy combination in treating cutaneous and subcutaneous malignant tumors.95... [Pg.510]

Prior clinical trials have attempted to discern the best manner in which to administer chemotherapy when combined with radiation. It may be given concurrently with standard radiotherapy, an alternating or split-course radiotherapy schedule, or in a sequential fashion as induction (prior to definitive treatment) or adjuvant (following definitive treatment) chemotherapy. Concomitant chemoradiotherapy is the use of both modalities simultaneously. Alternating chemoradiotherapy is the use of systemic chemotherapy for a definitive duration, followed by radiotherapy for a specified period followed by repeated alternations of the two modalities. Split-course chemoradio-therapy usually involves concomitant systemic doses of chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy for a specified duration followed by a rest period, and then the regimen is repeated. This approach allows planned treatment breaks for toxicity recovery. [Pg.146]

The MACH-NC study included a subset analysis of six randomized trials of 861 patients evaluating neoadjuvant with or without adjuvant chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy vs concomitant/alternating chemotherapy. No significant benefit was associated with adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy. A trend in favor of concomitant or alternating chemoradiotherapy was found but was not determined to be statistically significant (p =... [Pg.161]

The chemotherapy of advanced Hodgkin s disease is one of the best examples of successful combination chemotherapy. Combination therapy with the MOPP regimen (mechlorethamine, Oncovin [vincristine sulfate], procarbazine, prednisone), alternating with ABVD (Adriamycin [doxorubicin hydrochloride], bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine), has resulted in cure rates of 50 to 60%. [Pg.635]

Cancer chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy and/or surgery can be effective in restraining or even curing many forms of cancer. As our understanding of cellular mechanics continues to grow, so will our ability to increase the overall survival rates of cancer patients. [Pg.491]

Some common anticancer drug combinations and the types of cancer in which they are used are listed in Table 36-8. These drug combinations are often indicated by an acronym of the drug names. For instance, FAC indicates a regimen of fluorouracil, doxorubicin (Adriamycin), and cyclophosphamide. These abbreviations are used to summarize drug therapy in a patient s medical chart, so therapists should be aware of the more common chemotherapy combinations. [Pg.582]

The safety and efficacy of tropisetron in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting has been reviewed (10). Tropisetron monotherapy is effective for the control of acute, and to some extent delayed, nansea and vomiting in patients receiving emetogenic chemotherapy. Combining it with dexamethasone increases its efficacy. [Pg.1366]

The addition of trastuzumab to chemotherapy has resulted in a survival advantage for metastatic breast cancer patients with /-/f/ 2-overexpressing/amplified tumors compared with chemotherapy alone. However, the use of trastuzumab-chemotherapy combinations in the adjuvant setting has yet to be substantiated. These patients tend to have a poor prognosis with chemotherapy alone and may benefit from additional therapy. However, there are not yet data to demonstrate additional benefit with this combination compared with chemotherapy alone. [Pg.2348]

Regional chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy reduces hepatic progression and may improve 2-year survival significantly according to phase III trials (Kemeny et al. 1999). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may improve survival and extent of surgery according to phase II and historical control trials (Tanaka et al. 2003 Wein et al. 2003). [Pg.379]
