Adventitious

This method suffers from two disadvantages. Since it measures 7 or changes in 7 rather than t directly, temperature drifts or adventitious impurities can alter 7 and be mistakenly attributed to changes in film pressure. Second, while ensuring that zero contact angle is seldom a problem in the case of pure liquids, it may be with film-covered surfaces as film material may adsorb on the slide. This problem can be a serious one roughening the plate may help, and some of the literature on techniques is summarized by Gaines [69]. On the other hand, the equipment for the Wilhelmy slide method is simple and inexpensive and can be just as accurate as the film balance described below. [Pg.114]

We noted in Section VII-2B that, given the set of surface tension values for various crystal planes, the Wulff theorem allowed the construction of fhe equilibrium or minimum firee energy shape. This concept may be applied in reverse small crystals will gradually take on their equilibrium shape upon annealing near their melting point and likewise, small air pockets in a crystal will form equilibrium-shaped voids. The latter phenomenon offers the possible advantage that adventitious contamination of the solid-air interface is less likely. [Pg.280]

Adventitious losses of the reagent, due, e.g., to the chemical action of the alkaline glass vessels, slight absorption by the corks, etc., are almost identical for the actual and the control experiments and therefore do nor affect the difference in result between the two experiments. [Pg.450]

The nitric acid used in this work contained 10% of water, which introduced a considerable proportion of acetic acid into the medium. Further dilution of the solvent wnth acetic acid up to a concentration of 50 moles % had no effect on the rate, but the addition of yet more acetic acid decreased the rate, and in the absence of acetic anhydride there was no observed reaction. It was supposed from these results that the adventitious acetic acid would have no effect. The rate coefficients of the nitration diminished rapidly with time in one experiment the value of k was reduced by a factor of 2 in i h. Corrected values were obtained by extrapolation to zero time. The author ascribed the decrease to the conversion of acetyl nitrate into tetranitromethane, but this conversion cannot be the explanation because independent studies agree in concluding that it is too slow ( 5.3.1). [Pg.86]

The most direct test of the tensile strength hypothesis would be to compare the value of Tq calculated from the closure point of the isotherm by Equation (3.61) with the tensile strength of the bulk liquid determined directly. Unfortunately, experimental measurement of the tensile strength is extremely difficult because of the part played by adventitious factors such as the presence of solid particles and dissolved gases, so that the values in the literature vary widely (between 9 and 270 bar for water at 298 K, for example). [Pg.158]

The molecules used in the study described in Fig. 2.15 were model compounds characterized by a high degree of uniformity. When branching is encountered, it is generally in a far less uniform way. As a matter of fact, traces of impurities or random chain transfer during polymer preparation may result in a small amount of unsuspected branching in samples of ostensibly linear molecules. Such adventitious branched molecules can have an effect on viscosity which far exceeds their numerical abundance. It is quite possible that anomalous experimental results may be due to such effects. [Pg.127]

Formaldehyde polymerizes even without added catalyst, but it is possible that traces of formic acid act as adventitious catalysts in this system. [Pg.413]

Arsenic is another element with different bioavailabiUty in its different redox states. Arsenic is not known to be an essential nutrient for eukaryotes, but arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) are toxic, with the latter being rather more so, at least to mammals. Nevertheless, some microorganisms grow at the expense of reducing arsenate to arsenite (81), while others are able to reduce these species to more reduced forms. In this case it is known that the element can be immobilized as an insoluble polymetallic sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria, presumably adventitiously due to the production of hydrogen sulfide (82). Indeed many contaminant metal and metalloid ions can be immobilized as metal sulfides by sulfate reducing bacteria. [Pg.36]

Solvent Preparation. The most critical aspect of the solvent is that it must be dry (less than 0.02 wt % of H2O) and free of O2. If the H2O content is above 0.02 wt %, then the reaction of Mg and RX does not initiate, except for an extremely reactive RX species, such as benzyl bromide. Although adventitious O2 does not retard the initiation process, the O2 reacts with the Grignard reagent to form a RMg02X species. Furthermore, upon hydrolysis, the oxidized Grignard reagent forms a ROH species that may cause purification problems. [Pg.393]

Modem real time instmmental methods permit analyses of unstable transient species and the free-radical intermediates as well. These methods have gready expanded the scope and power of VPO studies, but important basic questions remain unresolved. Another complication is the role of surface. Peroxide decompositions and radical termination reactions can occur on a surface so that, depending on circumstances, surfaces can have either an inhibiting or accelerating effect. Each surface has varying amounts of adventitious contaminants and also accumulates deposits during reaction. Thus no two surfaces are exactly alike and each changes with time. [Pg.338]

Unless working with superdried systems or in the presence of proton traps, adventitious water is always present as a proton source. Polymeriza tion rates, monomer conversions, and to some extent polymer molecular weights are dependent on the amount of protic impurities therefore, weU-estabHshed drying methods should be followed to obtain reproducible results. The importance is not the elimination of the last trace of adventitious water, a heroic task, but to estabhsh a more or less constant level of dryness. [Pg.244]

No clear picture of the primary radical intermediate(s) in the HO2 photooxidation of water has appeared. The nature of the observed radical species depends on the origin and pretreatment of the HO2 sample, on the conditions and extent of its reduction, on the extent of surface hydroxylation, and on the presence of adventitious electron acceptors such as molecular oxygen (41). The hole is trapped on the terminal OH group (54). [Pg.404]

Much progress has been made ia understanding how to create and use catalysts, but the design and preparation of practical catalysts stUl rehes on a substantial amount of art that is, the appHcation of known facts and iatuition to trial and error methods. General principles are described ia a number of texts (18—21). Very few completely new catalyst systems have been designed from first principles or completely theoretical considerations. New catalysts are much more likely to be discovered as a result of an adventitious observation than designed by iatent. [Pg.195]

Environmentally Available Reactants. Under normal conditions ethyleneamines are considered to be thermally stable molecules. However, they are sufftciendy reactive that upon exposure to adventitious water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and oxygen, trace levels of by-products can form and increased color usually results. [Pg.43]

The AE reaetion is general and effieient, thus few substantial improvements have been reported. The most signifieant improvement to the original eonditions is the addition of aetivated moleeular sieves. The addition of aetivated moleeular sieves allows for almost all AE reaetion to be performed under eatalytie eonditions (5-10 mol%). The role of the moleeular sieves is thought to sequester any adventitious water or water that may be generated during the eourse of the reaetion via side reaetions. [Pg.53]

Anticoagulant therapy was developed with the adventitious discovery of dicoumarol (8). A fuller discussion of the rationale for the use of such compounds is found in the chapter on Five-Mem-bered Heterocycles Fused to One Benzene Ring. The reader s attention is directed, however, at the fact that dicoumarol is a polycarbonyl compound containing a very acidic hydrogen. A series of similarly acidic 1,3-indandiones have been found to constitute an additional class of anticoagulant agents. [Pg.147]

This class of medicinal agents was uncovered quite adventitiously in a chemical study, although due credit must be given for the acute pharmacologic studies that uncovered this novel type of activity. [Pg.363]

The adventitious discovery of the antitumor action of the nitrogen mustard poison war gases led to intensive investigation of the mode of action of these compounds. In brief, it has been fairly well established that these agents owe their effect to the presence of the highly reactive bis(2-chloroethyl)amine group. The cytotoxic activity of... [Pg.82]
