Direct tests

To this point we have looked to the past to understand the changing relations between biodiversity and biogeochemisry. Recently, there has been considerable research into the role of species richness in ecosystem functioning, including biogeochemistry. There have been explicit experiments on this issue as well as observations on the impact of addition and deletion of species on natural eco.systems.

The most direct test is to compare the BET area with the geometrical area of the solid. Unfortunately, comparisons of this kind are relatively rare on account of experimental difficulties. The choices are to work with, say, single crystals having a well defined surface, when techniques of quite extraordinary sensitivity will be needed for measurement of the adsorption or, to obtain a larger surface area by use of thin sheets, narrow rods or small spheres, and run the risk that the surface will not be truly smooth so that the actual area will exceed the geometrical area. 

The most direct test of the tensile strength hypothesis would be to compare the value of Tq calculated from the closure point of the isotherm by Equation (3.61) with the tensile strength of the bulk liquid determined directly. Unfortunately, experimental measurement of the tensile strength is extremely difficult because of the part played by adventitious factors such as the presence of solid particles and dissolved gases, so that the values in the literature vary widely (between 9 and 270 bar for water at 298 K, for example).

This arrester is nsnally designed to be effective in one direction only. However, hydranlic arresters exist that are reported to be effective in preventing flame propagation in both directions. Tests to establish this on a particnlar hydranlic arrester design are described by Flessner and Bjorklnnd (1981).

Here is a proposal subject to direct test. We can place steel wool under an atmosphere that excludes oxygen gas, and look for a change in the heating behavior. We go to the laboratory, heat steel wool under carbon dioxide and, lo, the steel wool melts ... 

It can be seen that k in Eq. (10) replaces the system-describing parameters L and Ah in Eq. (1). A direct test of the hypothesis is therefore to plot (j> against k for fixed values of P, G, and d, with L and Ah varying. For the hypothesis to be correct, the data points must all lie on a smooth curve. Experience shows, however, that plotting (f> against k often produces an undue amount of scatter which may obscure and distort any true relationship existing. This enhanced scatter is caused by the cumulative effect of experimental errors in the various terms in the heat-balance equation from which the quality k is derived. 

A direct test of this mechanism is awaited. Haim S" notes that the primary Fe(III) product of reduction of /ra s-Co(NH3)4(OH2)N3 + should be detectable using a suitable flow apparatus.

Although several allelochemicals (primarily phenolic acids and flavonoids) have been shown to inhibit mineral absorption, only the phenolic acids have been studied at the physiological and biochemical levels to attempt to determine if mineral transport across cellular membranes can be affected directly rather than indirectly. Similar and even more definitive experiments need to be conducted with other allelochemicals that are suspected of inhibiting mineral absorption. Membrane vesicles isolated from plant cells are now being used to elucidate the mechanism of mineral transport across the plasma membrane and tonoplast (67, 68). Such vesicle systems actively transport mineral ions and thus can serve as simplified systems to directly test the ability of allelochemicals to inhibit mineral absorption by plant cells. 

Direct test particle methods are expected to be inefficient, compared to other possibilities, for molecular systems described with moderate realism. Successful placements of a test particle may be complicated, and placements with favorable Boltzmann factor scores may be rare. Fortunately, the tools noted above are generally available to design more-specific approaches for realistic cases. 

Nevertheless, direct test particle calculations have been of great conceptual importance, particularly in cases where there is a consensus on the relevance of simplified model solutes [2-4, 6, 9, 10,41 15]. The related particle insertion techniques are used for simulating phase equilibria, as discussed in Chap. 10.
