The hydrophobic character exhibited by dehydroxylated silica is not shared by the metal oxides on which detailed adsorption studies have been made, in particular the oxides of Al, Cr, Fe, Mg, Ti and Zn. With these oxides, the progressive removal of chemisorbed water leads to an increase, rather than a decrease, in the affinity for water. In recent years much attention has been devoted, notably by use of spectroscopic and adsorption techniques, to the elucidation of the mechanism of the physisorption and chemisorption of water by those oxides the following brief account brings out some of the salient features. [Pg.274]

Several properties of the filler are important to the compounder (279). Properties that are frequentiy reported by fumed sihca manufacturers include the acidity of the filler, nitrogen adsorption, oil absorption, and particle size distribution (280,281). The adsorption techniques provide a measure of the surface area of the filler, whereas oil absorption is an indication of the stmcture of the filler (282). Measurement of the sdanol concentration is critical, and some techniques that are commonly used in the industry to estimate this parameter are the methyl red absorption and methanol wettabihty (273,274,277) tests. Surface Area. The most important features influencing the performance of carbon blacks are aggregate size and surface area. Surface area is measured by gas- and Hquid-phase adsorption techniques, and depends on the amount of adsorbate required to form a surface monolayer. If the area occupied by a single-adsorbate molecule is known, a simple calculation will yield the surface area. A low temperature nitrogen absorption method, based on the original method of Bmnauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) (30), has been adopted by ASTM as standard method D3037-86 (2). [Pg.548]

Discrimination between the enantiomers of a racemic mixture is a complex task in analytical sciences. Because enantiomers differ only in their structural orientation, and not in their physico-chemical properties, separation can only be achieved within an environment which is unichiral. Unichiral means that a counterpart of the race-mate to be separated consists of a pure enantiomeric form, or shows at least enrichment in one isomeric form.
