Various sorbents

5 The sorbent bed volume. This value includes the portion of the bed which is not completely saturated when the sorption step is stopped as well as the void space in the bed. The mass transfer rates (transport processes) for sorption have a large influence on the bed size and dimensions. Some design approaches are based on sizing the unused portion of the sorbent bed, as discussed in Section 7.8. [Pg.187]

6 Sorbent deactivation. Components in the feed stream can strongly adsorb and/or react with the sorbent and substantially reduce its effective lifetime. [Pg.187]

7 Cost. Less expensive sorbents that can be easily regenerated are preferred. [Pg.187]

The type of sorbent that will work for a given application will be chosen by consideration of these factors. Once the sorbent type is chosen, the particle size and shape need to be considered. These factors affect both the pressure drop in the sorbent bed and the mass transfer rate from the fluid to the sorbent surface. As general rules of thumb, the pressure drop through the bed increases as the particle size decreases. In contrast, the mass transfer rate usually increases as the particle size decreases. The factors do not vary to the same degree with particle size so some balance needs to be made in the chosen design [6]. [Pg.187]

Activated carbon is prepared by (a) heating organic materials such as wood, coal char, almond, coconut, or walnut shells, as well as vinyl copolymers or recycled tires in a stoichiometric 02-deficient atmosphere, and (b) activating the product by exposure to a mild oxidizing gas (CO2 or steam, for example) at a high temperature. The activation [Pg.187]

Figure 9 shows adsorption isotherms for this protein on the various sorbents. As is usually observed for proteins at surfaces, the adsorption affinity is higher for the hydrophobic surfaces than for the hydrophilic ones. To date, typical SPE materials are based on silica gel or highly cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB). The former is functionalised with distinct chemical groups to yield various sorbents with non-polar or polar characteristics. Non-polar materials are modified with alkyl groups of different chain length (C18, C8, C2), while polar sorbents have cyano-, amino-, or diol-bonded groups. Ion-exchange phases have either anionic or cationic functional groups. [Pg.426]

Adsorption techniques have been successful in removing oil-grease. Clay minerals have been the most widely used absorbent because its cost is low and they can be reached easily. Oil-grease adsorption on various sorbents has been studied by many researchers [1-6]. [Pg.206]

This equation can be derived from potential theory. The entropy and enthalpy changes as functions of the loading state are the prime differentiators for various sorbent/sorbate pairs. These loading dependencies are indicated by the form of the functions AS(x) and AH(x). Here the dependencies are written strictly as functions of the loading (x) only. There may some modest temperature dependency as well. The heat and entropy changes with temperature tend to be small hence the universal form tends to be linear in reciprocal temperature over a wide range of temperatures. [Pg.278]

The apparatus shown in Figure 6, used for determining recoveries of TRIS on various sorbents, was comprised of three basic sections. The glass beads in Section A were spiked with TRIS and heated to 100°C while maintaining a flow rate of 3.7 J/min air through the beads with a Nutech Model 221-lA air sampling pump (Nutech Corp.,... [Pg.224]

The use of various sorbents and desorption systems permits (often necessitates) gas chromatographic detectors other than the most commonly used flame detector or electron capture detector. The use of a selective detector can greatly simplify a difficult analytical problem by reducing interferences and background peaks. Many applications are discussed in the literature (21,22,23,24). [Pg.164]

Arsenic impurities may be removed from synthetic gas with various sorbents, such as zinc ferrite (ZnFe204) or, under carefully controlled temperatures, mixtures of copper(II) oxide and carbon (Quinn et al., 2006 Diaz-Somoano, L6pez-Ant6n and Martfnez-Tarazona, 2004). Specifically, zinc ferrite may capture AS4 vapors through the following reaction (Diaz-Somoano, Lopez-Anton and Martfnez-Tarazona, 2004) ... [Pg.296]

In the present study, various sorbents were tested for the critical properties of capacity for succinic acid, regenerability of the sorbent, and coadsorption of substrates. These criteria were evaluated in order to choose a suitable sorbent for use with either a primary purification step or an in situ separation and fermentation. Other factors that were considered were the pH, temperature, and potential ability to concentrate the product. [Pg.655]

A number of separations (of BHC isomers, of bromophos-ethyl and dimethoate. and of the active constituents of Trevespan 6038) were performed in order to provide a qualitative and quantitative comparison between TLC and HPTLC pre-coated plates, or between HPTLC plates coated with various sorbents, and in order to demonstrate their use in pesticide chemistry. [Pg.159]

At this stage it seemed reasonable to explore the simultaneous absorption of NO2 and SO2 using various sorbents. It is technically possible to oxidize the NO in fine gas to NO2 prior to absorption, and the sulfite required to absorb the NO2 can be produced from the SO2 already present in the gas stream. [Pg.214]

Owing to its high toxicity, phosgene waste-gas must be recycled, destroyed or, in some way, removed to prevent environmental contamination or hazards to personnel. This Section is concerned with the main methods for chemically removing phosgene from gaseous effluents, the extent to which phosgene is taken up and retained by various sorbents, and the effect of time, temperature, pressure and moisture on the sorption. [Pg.176]

Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with ELD, using CO2 or C02-MeOH as mobile phase, was applied to simultaneous determination of 11 priority phenols and 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Voltammetric measurements allow low-nanogram detection limits of reducible and oxidizable analytes, even if they elute simultaneously from the chromatographic column . SFC with MeOH-modified CO2 was performed under isobaric and pressure-programmed conditions, combined with ELD. LOD was 250 p,g of 2,6-dimethylphenol for oxidative ELD and 100 pg of 1,3-dinitrobenzene for reductive ELD . Various sorbents were investigated for SPE preconcentration prior to SFC 20 . [Pg.955]

Finally, sorbents such as aminopropyl, cyanopropyl, and diol can be used for both reversed-phase and normal-phase separations. Many manufacturers supply their sorbents in variety packs that may be used for methods development. Also quality assurance reports are commonly available for the various sorbents, which is a good indication of their reproducibility. Later chapters will show specific applications, such as environmental, drugs and pharmaceuticals, and food and natural products. [Pg.15]

In the dry particles, oxygen uptake occurs on a measurable time scale (minutes). Here the span of the experiment is the particle radius. Such experiments hold the promise of providing sorption rates into the stabilizer phase and into the interphase. We are investigating whether it is in fact possible to obtain information in sufficient detail to measure the magnitude of the interphase in the dry particles and to obtain the solubilities and diffusion coefficients of various sorbents within the various individual phases of the material. [Pg.16]

Various sorbents may be required for these processes, as any such process may include several steps, each of which may operate with a different sorbent. Besides, the fluid to be processed could be a gas or a liquid, which expands the selection of suitable sorbents. [Pg.634]
