The reversible adsorption of organic molecules on electrodes was been discussed in (Section 6.9.3). Here, one is interested in irreversible adsorption, organic molecules that form a film and stick on the electrode through washings and also when the new electrode is used in various reactions. 

Adsorption. Organic compounds are adsorbed on activated carbon and synthetic resins (eg, XAD-2 and XAD-4, Rohm and Haas Co.). This technique depends on the properties of the compound being removed and the regenerative capabiHty of the adsorbent. The EPA has developed carbon-adsorption isotherms for various toxic organic compounds, and the results are shown in Table 7 (36). The following compounds are not adsorbed on activated carbon acetone cyanohydrin, butylamine, choline chloride, cyclohexylamine, diethylene glycol, ethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, morpholine, and triethanolamine. 

Additionally, there are smoke flavourings produced from the water-insoluble tars through a distillation process [9] and on through an alkaline adsorption/organic extraction of whole smoke vapours [10].

The overview below summarizes some additional observations of interfacial electrochemical adsorption, organization, and charge transfer, of importance to approaches towards single-molecule electrochemical conductivity and in situ STM of DNA-based molecules to follow in Sections 4 and 5.

Ionic compounds added to the micellar system for pH or ionic strength adjustment increase usually the surfactant adsorption. Organic solvents, in contrast, decrease the amount of adsorbed surfactant. The alkyl chains of propanol and longer -alcohols form on the stationary phase a monolayer similar to that of adsorbed surfactant molecules, with the hydroxyl group oriented toward the aqueous phase. Alcohol and surfactant molecules compete for adsorption sites. For ionic surfactants, the desorbing ability depends on the organic solvent polarity (methanol adsorbed surfactant molecules decreases linearly with the organic solvent concentration.
