There are several plasticizers for PVC that may be used in propellants. Weil (19) mentions sebacates, phthalates, adipates, and glycol esters of higher fatty acids as being desirable. Dibutyl sebacate, dioctyl sebacate, and 2-ethylhexyl adipate are all good. The plasticizer has a most important effect on the physical properties of the cured propellant and the variation of these properties with temperature. Long chain, aliphatic plasticizers impart improved low temperature flexibility, and hence are preferable to aromatic plasticizers such as the phthalates. An increase in plasticizer viscosity leads to an increase in viscosity of the mixed pro-... [Pg.46]

It has already been mentioned that a large number of components are used for the construction of wood-based furniture. In addition to the compounds described earlier, a large spectrum of volatile organics can be found in emission studies (Salthammer, 1997b). The main sources for formaldehyde (which is not considered here), phenol and acetic acid are substrates such as particle board and MDF. BHT is a common antioxidant. Volatile plasticizers include dimethyl phthalate (DMP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), as well as esters of adipic acid and sebacic acid. Further important compound groups are amines, siloxanes, carboxylic acids and naphthalenes. The identification of special substances does not only require suitable analytical equipment. Both experience and detailed knowledge of the chemical composition of furniture are also necessary. [Pg.215]

The acid-catalyzed equilibrium of a dibasic acid with its mono- and di-esters furnishes a means of preparation of alkyl hydrogen esters of most aliphatic a,o)-dibasic acids. A mixture of the acid and its dialkyl ester is refluxed with concentrated hydrochloric acid and dibutyl ether, and the add ester is isolated by fractional distillation or extraction techniques. Excellent directions are given for the acid esters of adipic, sebacic, and azelaic acids. [Pg.249]

A lot of plasticizers typically with two ester groups have been described in the literature [39] including aliphatic diesters of phthalic acid, like diethyl phthalate, and diesters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids like dibutyl adipate or azelate [22] as well as glycerol triacetate (triacetin), citrate esters, and phosphates [39]. Although these kind of plasticizers work well for decades in various applications, the accelerated retention test shows [39] that exudation and volatilization must be taken into account and can cause changes in the material performance. Thus, attempts have been made to synthesize long-chain esters of cellulose (LCCEs) with acid chain lengths of up to 20 carbon atoms (see [21] and references cited therein), which could be processed without external plasticizers. Positive results are reported for cellulose acetate hexanoate and cellulose acetate nonanoate [21] but these esters did not go into production. [Pg.49]

Polyfunctional Fatty Acid Esters. Dioctyl sebacate (DOS), dibutyl sebacate (DBS), diisobutyl adipate (DIBA), monoisopropyl citrate, stearyl citrate, triethyl citrate (TEC), butyl and octyl maleates, and fumarates are very important plasticizers for the preparation of stable PVC pastes and of low-temperature-resistant PVC products. DOS is used most often because of its high plasticization efficiency, its low volatility, and its resistance to water and soap solutions. It presents many advantages for PVC products. DBS, DIBA, and monoisopropyl, stearyl, and triethyl citrates are recommended for plastics components intended for packaging of food products. Butyl and octyl maleates and fumarates can be used for internal plasticization, that is, for copolymerization with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and styrene. [Pg.24]
