Adeps lanae, anhydrous n. Pharmaceutical name for lanohn or purified wood grease. [Pg.26]

Lanolin, wool fat, wool wax the fatty or more correctly waxy substance secreted by the skin of the sheep, m-p. 36-42°C. L constitutes up to 50% of the wei t of raw wool. It is a complicated mixture of fatty adds, alcohols, fats and waxy substances. The latter are chiefly esters of steroids (cholesterol and lanoster-ol) and long chain aliphatic alcohols with higher fatty acids, which are 6-hydroxylated or carry a terminal isopropyl or isobutyl residue. L. is obtained from raw wool by extraction with organic solvents or soap solutions. It forms water-in-oil suspensions, and is used widely in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries (as Adeps Lanae) as an ointment base. [Pg.352]

Waxes are esters of higher fatty acids and fatty alcohols. Pharmaceutically important examples are the liquid Decyl oleate (unsaturated Cetiol V ), the semisolid Wool fat (Adeps lanae) and the solids Yellow wax (Cera flava). Bees wax, white (Cera alba, white wax) and Cetyl palmitate (Cetaceum). The solid waxes are mainly used to increase the consistency of semisolid skin preparations (see Sect. 12.5.2). Waxy liquid compounds are ethyl oleate, isopropyl myristate and benzyl benzoate. In the first two cases the fatty acid is esterified with a short-chain alcohol. [Pg.477]

Wool fat (Adeps lanae this is a wax and not a fat) is used in ointments and in eye ointments and increases the penetration ability of lipophilic ointments. A drawback is the chance of contact allergy. Due to the presence of free surface active lanolin alcohols Wool fat has a greater power to absorb water than flie other waxes. Lanolin (Adeps lanae cum aqua) is an emulsion of 25 %water in 75 % Wool fat. [Pg.477]

Cholesterol and lanolin alcohols are examples of alcohols with cyclic carbon structures (w/o). Cholesterol is used as such. It is suitable in combination with the phospholipids as an emulsifier for the preparation of parenteral emulsions and in liposome technology. The lanolin alcohols are found in wool fat (Adeps lanae) and Eucerinum anhydricum. They are present as w/o-emulsifier in cutaneous preparatiOTis. [Pg.483]

Various types (degree of purity) of 1. are available on the market. Crude 1. is a dark brownish material, which melts at 34-38 °C and has an unpleasant odor, while neutral 1. is yellow and has a m.p. of 38-42 °C. Adeps lanae is the purest type, slightly yellowish and odorless. Commercial 1. may also be a mixture of wool wax (65%), water (20%) and paraffin (15%). L. can emulsify a large volume of water. [Pg.162]
