Microcapsules are used in a number of pharmaceutical, graphic arts, food, agrochemical, cosmetic, and adhesive products. Other specialty products also exist, thus the concept of microencapsulation has been accepted by a wide range of industries. In order to illustrate how microcapsules are used commercially, it is appropriate to describe a number of commercial microcapsule-based products and the role that microcapsules play in these products.

The use of high purity selenium in digital imaging is considered a potential market. Selenium-based plates can be used to replace conventional silver-based x-ray film, and in 1994 the Xerox Corporation introduced a selenium-based product, Verdefilm, for use in graphic arts appHcations.

Triacetate film is used in the graphic arts, for greetings cards, and for specialised electrical applications such as non-conducting separators.

For decades the problem of stability has plagued colloid chemists and others engaged in the manufacture and use of dispersions. Only a determined practical approach to the solution of this problem has been responsible for the modest accumulation of theoretical knowledge in existence today. In the field of dispersions, for example, problems of physical instability have been solved for paints, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, asphalt, detergents, and commodities used in the graphic arts, in addition to the numerous successful encounters with instability (or sometimes with undesired stability) in the food industry.
