Adhesion Determination

The viscosity of elastomeric adhesives determines their method of application. Typically, solvent-borne rubber compounds require low viscosities for application. Thus, viscosities lower than 0.6 Pas for spray, curtain or dip applications are required, whereas for brush application viscosities lower than 5 Pa s are generally used. Roll- coating technology requires viscosities between 5 and 15 Pa s. [Pg.577]

The testing of the peel resistance occurs according to the standard DIN EN 1464 Adhesives - determination of peel resistance of high-strength bonded joints - climbing drum peel test (respectively, T-peel test) and serves the determination of the resistance of bonded metal joints to peeling forces (Figure 10.5). [Pg.131]

The examples discussed above impressively show the diversity and importance of interaction between bacterial adhesion determinants and carbohydrate-containing receptor molecules. Pathogenic bacteria use binding to carbohydrates in different disease stages. However, many questions remain to be answered to unravel the full spectrum of bacteria-host interactions via carbohydrate binding. [Pg.116]

In the heat of solubility method for adhesion determination, the film material is chemically dissolved from the substrate, e.g. by an exothermic reaction. The total energy thus converted consists of the energy released by the dissolving of the pure film material less the energy required to break the bonds between film and substrate. To enhance the contribution from the adhesion the ratio of the number of molecules on the film/substrate interface should be as high as possible in relation to the total number of molecules in the film. The thermal yield of the reaction is determined with a microcalorimeter, although tests with coated metal films on NaCl substrates have shown the sensitivity of such equipment to be, as yet, insufficient for exact measurements [74,75]. [Pg.81]

ISO 11343, 1993, Adhesives—Determination of dynamic resistance to cleavage of high strength adhesive bonds under impact conditions- Wedge impact method The method is mainly aimed for the characterisation of metal substrates suitable for automotive applications. An instrumented impact testing machine (pendulum type) of 50-300 J and. 3-5.5ms maximum capacity is required for this test. A blunt wedge of approximately 1 mm tip radius and included angle of 8 is impact driven into a bonded joint at 3 ms" for aluminum alloy adherends and 2 ms" for steel adherends. The impact event should be... [Pg.575]

Figure 4.50i l indicates the adhesion of latex-modified mortars to ordinary cement mortar as a substrate, measured by four types of test methods. CJenerally, the adhesions in tension, flexure, and direct compressive shear of the latex-modified mortars to ordinary cement mortar increase with a rise in the polymer-cement ratio regardless of the type of polymer and test method. The adhesion in slant (indirect) compressive shear of the latex-modified mortars attains a maximum at a polymer-cement ratio of 5 or 10%, and is extremely large compared to the adhesions determined by other test methods irrespective of the polymer type and polymer-cement ratio. The reasons for diis may be due to the effects of the combined shear and compressive stresses and their relaxation by the polymer films formed on the bonding joints. Considering the above adhesion data, it is most important to select the best test methods to successfully reproduce service conditions in the applications of the latex-modifled mortars. [Pg.111]

Interaction of the adhesive isocyanate groups with water alters a number of adhesive properties such as the modulus of elasticity, the adhesion strength, electric properties, etc. Thus, the modulus of elasticity of adhesives determined at 3 days eifter caning for specimens cemented and kept in air, in water, and in oil was 40, 110, 160 MPa, respectively at 100 days these values increased to 400, 120, 320MPa. [Pg.104]

Acid-base interactions have found numerous applieations in research dealing with adsorption of molecules of liquids on the surfaees of solids. The main focus of this research is to estimate the thermodynamic work of adhesion, determine mechanism of interactions, analyze the morphology of interfaces and various surfaee coatings, develop surface modifiers, study the aggregation of macromolecular materials, explain the kinetics of swelling and drying, understand the absorption of low molecular weight compounds in polymeric matrices, and determine the properties of solid surfaces. In addition to these, there are many other applieations. [Pg.565]

The following techniques are useful for analysis and charaterization for the sizing on the fibres SEM, IR and 6PC of extracts, IGC and DMA (T ) for the fibre-matrix bond micro bond, micro failure with SEM [2], confocal laser scanning microscopy [3] DMA, flexural strength, ILSS and impact of the uni-directional composites (fixed fibre length, orientation and volume fraction distributions). After this detailed analysis, the fibres are tested in their application, which is an injection moulded compound for thermoplasts, where the microstructure (fibre length, fibre orientation and fibre-fibre distance distributions) as well as the fibre- matrix adhesion determine the mechanical properties. [Pg.412]

Arguably, thermal-welding processes can be considered a subset of adhesive bonding. With thermal-joining processes, the substrate itself (in molten form) acts as the adhesive. Once the substrate is liquefied, the principles of adhesion determine the strength and durability of the bond. In addition, thermal methods can be used to activate a hot-melt adhesive rather than the textile substrate. [Pg.338]
