Adhesion, Adhesives, and Heat Sealing

The first part of this chapter will cover the adhesion process utilizing an adhesive. Heat sealing of thermoplastic materials will be covered next. [Pg.185]

The global adhesives market was about 32 billion in 2010 [Ij. This included about 14.3 billion in water-borne adhesives, 6.9 billion in solvent-borne adhesives, and 5.3 billion in 100% solids adhesives. The 2012 market for adhesives and sealants combined was estimated at 42.5 billion for 2012 [2], with North American accounting for 11.8 billion. Western Europe 8.7 billion. Southeast Asia and Australia 13.8 billion, Russia and Eastern Europe 4.5 billion, and the rest of the world 3.7 billion. In 2010, sealants accounted for about 21% of the overall adhesives and sealants category [Ij. If this percentage remained steady, this would put the global adhesives market at about 34 billion for 2012. The amount of adhesives used globally in 2010 was estimated at 9 million metric tons [3]. [Pg.186]

Besides these factors, several ozone related parameters were identified that could affect adhesion and heat seal strength. These parameters were ozone flow rate, ozone concentration (power setting on ozone unit), and geometry of the ozone applicator set-up, such as horizontal distance and angle from horizontal. The levels used in this design are found in Table 5.1, accomplished by a combination of oxidation of the extrudate and treatment of the substrate. [Pg.51]

In the adhesives area, thermoplastic, fatty polyamides are used in hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives for leather, paper, plastic and metal. Blends of EDA- and DETA-based polyamides are suggested for use in metal can seam sealants with improved toughness (234) pressure sensitive adhesives have been formulated with DETA-based polyamides (235) and anionic and cationic suspensoid adhesives are used as heat-seal coatings in paper converting (236). PIP and certain PIP derivatives are used with EDA in some appHcations (237). [Pg.47]

ProStep, developed by Elan and marketed by Ledede, dehvers nicotine over 24 hours (107) and is available ia a 22 mg dose (108). The system consists of a nicotine-containing carrageenan gel embedded and heat-sealed iato a foil—polyethylene laminate to isolate the nicotine from a peripheral acryhc adhesive duriag storage. [Pg.231]

Fabrics coated with FEP and PFA can be laminated and heat-sealed into protective garments, canopies, etc. FEP-coated polyimide films are used in electronics and as a wire tape. FEP-based anticorrosion coatings are used in the chemical industry and as chemical barriers.18 A thin coating of FEP or PFA can be used as a hot melt adhesive for a variety of substrates, including PTFE-coated fabrics and laminates. [Pg.136]

Articles may be assembled from plastics by adhesive bonding, heat sealing and welding (which are reviewed in subsequent chapters), and by a variety of physical methods of fixing including sewing with filament, thread, or wire. [Pg.50]

The adhesive may be solvent or water-based, hot-melt, coldseal or heatseal and pressure sensitive or chemically reactive. So the solidification process may occur via drying of water or solvent-based adhesives, by cooling of hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives, or by curing of chemically-reactive systems. With two notable exceptions - self-adhesive labels used on items of fruit or vegetables, and heat-sealable layers on packaging films - adhesives are in general not intended to touch the packaged food directly. [Pg.320]

Ethylene acid polymer is obtained by the copolymerisation of ethylene with either acrylic or methacrylic acid. These copolymers are somewhat similar to LDPE and are found as ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) and ethylene methacrylic acid (EMA). Both are used in various packaging applications, i.e. flexible packaging, adhesive laminating, hot melts, and heat seal coatings. [Pg.190]

Chlorinated Polyethylene and Polypropylene. Totally chlorinated polyethylene and polypropylene have a chlorine content of 64 68%. Their properties largely correspond to those of chlorinated rubber (see Section 2.3). Chlorinated polypropylenes can be used for chemical-resistant and weather-resistant coatings. These binders are important in adhesion priming coats and heat-sealing lacquers for polypropylene foils. [Pg.25]

Due to adhesion and flexural properties, the dimer acid-based polyesters are used as lubricants, adhesives and formed the basis of flexographic inks and heat seal coatings. They are used as vibration dampers when sandwiched between metal sheets [58]. [Pg.587]

SAIB is compatible with a wide variety of polymers, resins, plasticizers, oils, and waxes. Thus, the sucrose ester may be used in many types of coatings for various applications both for indoor and exterior exposure, including wood coatings, metal coatings, cloth and paper coatings, plastic lacquers, printing inks, and heat-sealing adhesives. Many suitable formulations have been developed for these applications (7,2). [Pg.221]

High molecular weight amine functional polymers, such as PEI, PVAm and PVAA are excellent adhesion promoters and serve as a strong tie-coat in the preparation of multi-layer composite structures between poly(ethylene terephthate) and ionomeric Surlyn . Using near infra-red spectroscopy, peel strength and heat seal data, we have... [Pg.193]

More recently the trend in equipment wiring has been for the use of small diameter, 0-25 and 0-4 mm wires, subject to sharp bends over closely spaced tags. Over the last 4 to 5 years attention has turned to the requirements of automatic wiring and cut, strip and wrap applications. The demand has been for tight tolerances to be maintained on tough thin wall insulation while producing controlled adhesion of insulation to conductor wire to ensure satisfactory stripping. As a result, polyvinylidene fluoride, PTFE and heat-sealed, wrapped... [Pg.265]

The main applications of LLDPE include stretch/cling film. The cling properties of both LDPE and LLDPE are set on one side to help adhesion between layers of the film and to reduce adhesion with adjacent packages. LDPE and LLDPE are often blended to get the advantages of both. Each of them can be used in blends with EVA to improve strength and heat sealing. [Pg.352]

Nonoriented Tedlar SP films (Types 8 and 9) offer excellent conformability to almost any shape or substrate while maintaining the durability, chemical resistance, and ease of cleaning expected of PVF film.1 ] Nonoriented films are available as multilayer films without adhesives or heat sealing. Multilayer technology allows for effects such as pearlescent or metallic colors. The Tedlar SP process allows a pigmented base layer to be covered with an integral clear top layer. [Pg.124]

Tackifier resins often increase the affinity of adhesives for specific surfaces such as plastics and metal foils. They also lower the softening and heat-sealing temperatures of adhesive films. [Pg.395]

Some flexible packaging is fabricated by converters into bags and pouches. Bag material is either small monolayer or large multiwall with paper as a principal substrate. Pouches are small and made from laminations. Bags usually contain a heat-sealed or adhesive-bonded seam mnning the length of the unit and a cross-seam bonded in the same fashion. [Pg.453]
