Example 5.17 Suppression of the Thermo-Oxidative CrossUnking of Polyisoprene by Addition of an Antioxidant [Pg.350]

Safety precautions Before this experiment is carried out. Sect. 2.2.5 must be read as well as the material safety data sheets (MSDS) for aU chemicals and products used. [Pg.350]

Because of the content of double bonds and a tertiary C-atom, polyisoprene undergoes numerous chemical transformations by the action of oxygen, light, or heat, like chain scission and crosslinking. The addition of suitable stabilizers can suppress these reactions even over a period of years. In the case of the thermo- [Pg.350]

A solution of 2 g (2 wt%) of polyisoprene (see Example 3.12) in 100 ml of dry toluene is prepared. To 50 ml of this solution 1 mg of IRGANOX 565 2,6-A tert-butyl)-4-[4,6-bis(octylthio)-l, 3,5-triazin-2-ylamino]phenol, Ciba Specialty Chemicals is added. From either solution a film is cast. To do this, 5 ml of the solution are evaporated in a Petri dish (d = 35 mm) at room temperamre. The films are then placed in a drying oven at 100°C for 6 h. If one tries to dissolve the thermally treated films afterwards in toluene, only the film with stabilizer is completely soluble the film without stabilizer shows only swelling and is therefore crosslinked. [Pg.351]

The decomposition of aqueous hydrogen peroxide is minimized by various purification steps during manufacture, use of clean passive equipment, control of contaminants, and the addition of stabilizers. The decomposition is zero-order with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration. [Pg.472]

The addition of stabilizers to tetrachloroethylene inhibits corrosion of aluminum, iron, and zinc which otherwise occurs in the presence of water (12). Where water in excess of the solubiUty limit is present, forming separate layers, hydrolysis and corrosion rates increase. System design and constmction materials should consider these effects. [Pg.28]

Additions of stabilized carbanions to imines and hydrazones, respectively, have been used to initiate domino 1,2-addition/cyclization reactions. Thus, as described by Benetti and coworkers, 2-subshtuted 3-nitropyrrolidines are accessible via a nitro-Mannich (aza-Henry)/SN-type process [165]. Enders research group established a 1,2-addition/lactamization sequence using their well-known SAMP/ RAMP-hydrazones 2-308 and lithiated o-toluamides 2-307 as substrates to afford the lactams 2-309 in excellent diastereoselectivity (Scheme 2.72) [166]. These compounds can be further transformed into valuable, almost enantiopure, dihydro-2H-isoquinolin-l-ones, as well as dihydro- and tetrahydroisoquinolines. [Pg.95]

The addition of stabilized ylides, e.g. (63), to nitrile imides or oxides gave pyrazoles or isoxazoles respectively (Scheme 23), in extremely clean reactions which probably proceed by electrophilic attack of the dipole at the y-carbon of the phosphorane.66... [Pg.191]

In the supported liquid membrane process, the liquid membrane phase impregnates a microporous solid support placed between the two bulk phases (Figure 15.1c). The liquid membrane is stabilized by capillary forces making unnecessary the addition of stabilizers to the membrane phase. Two types of support configurations are used hollow fiber or flat sheet membrane modules. These two types of liquid membrane configuration will be discussed in the following sections. [Pg.653]

Michael-type addition of stabilized carbon donors to electron-withdrawing a,p-unsaturated systems is an efficient method for C-C bond construction. The nitro-group... [Pg.157]

In its original form, the Michael addition consisted on the addition of diethyl malonate across the double bond of ethyl cinnamate in the presence of sodium ethoxide to afford a substituted pentanedioic acid ester. Currently, all reactions that involve a 1,4-addition of stabilized carbon nucleophiles to activated 7i-systems are known as Michael additions. Among the various reactants, enolates derived from p-dicarbonyl compounds are substrates of choice due to their easy deprotonation under mild conditions. Recently, Michael addition-based MCRs emerged as highly potential methodologies for the synthesis of polysubstituted heterocycles in the five- to seven-membered series. [Pg.256]

Over the past decade, a reliable, high-yielding method has been developed for the preparation of carbonyl ylide intermediates, namely, the addition of stabilized metallocarbenoid species to carbonyl compounds. [Pg.269]

Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. (Perma-Fix), has developed the Perma-Fix Process for the neutralization and stabilization of hazardons, radioactive, and mixed wastes. The Perma-Fix Process is a two-step treatment involving proprietary chemical treatment of wastes followed by the addition of stabilization chemicals to create a final waste form with the hazardous component of the wastes neutrahzed. The technology has been used commercially for several years. [Pg.859]

Commercial PVC is atactic and has a relatively high Tm (173 0, which is 100 C lower than that of /7-PVC. Because of weak linkages and the presence of some unsaturation, commercial PVC tends to discolor and decompose at normal processing temperatures. More-stable polymers are obtained by the addition of stabilizers or by post-chlorination. Because of the presence of the chlorine pendant group, unplasticized PVC has a higher coefficient of friction than hdpe. [Pg.151]

Another aspect of polysorbates is that they are inherently susceptible to oxidative degradation. Often, as raw materials, they contain sufficient quantities of peroxides to cause oxidation of protein residue side chains, especially methionine (59). The potential for oxidative damage arising from the addition of stabilizer emphasizes the point that the lowest effective concentrations of excipients should be used in formulations. For surfactants, the effective concentration for a given protein will depend on the mechanism of stabilization. It has been postulated that if the mechanism of surfactant stabilization is related to preventing surface-denaturation, the effective concentration will be around the detergent s critical micellar concentration. Conversely, if the mechanism of stabilization is associated with specific protein-detergent interactions, the effective surfactant concentration will be related to the protein concentration and the stoichiometry of the interaction (39). [Pg.301]

The addition of stabilized nucleophiles to activated ir-systems is one of the oldest and most useful constructive methods in organic synthesis, dating back more than a hundred years. In 1887 Michael, after whom the most well-known example of this reaction was named, published the first of a series of papers on this reaction describing the addition of the sodium salt of both diethyl malonate (1) and ethyl ace-toacetate (2) to ethyl cinnamate (3) to give the products (4) and (5), respectively (equation 1).1 This Mi-... [Pg.1]

These early results paved the way for a myriad of applications of this process in organic synthesis, as described in detail in this chapter. It should be pointed out that only additions of stabilized nucleophiles are included here, with the addition of reactive nucleophiles (organolithiums, Grignards, cuprates, etc.), Lewis acid promoted additions and asymmetric nucleophilic additions, among others, being covered in Chapters 1.3 and 1.5, respectively, in this volume. [Pg.3]
